About us
Who are we? Cystic Fibrosis Western Australia was established in the 1970’s by a group of concerned parents. The Association was a self-help organisation, holding regular meetings to share information, purchase equipment and fundraise to support research into cystic fibrosis. In essence the work of CFWA remains the same today. We provide education, counselling, advocacy, recreation and home care services. We also provide home nursing and physiotherapy services to enable early discharge and early intervention from hospital. Mission Statement Our mission is to contribute to the social, physical and emotional well being of those affected by cystic fibrosis and to assist in the promotion of research. Our Philosophy Cystic Fibrosis Western Australia believes that each person should be given the best care and support that it can provide in a comprehensive, empathetic and professional manner. Our Vision Lives unaffected by CF.

Congratulations to Dr Pamela Laird, on winning Allied Health Researcher of the Year in WA! A fantastic acknowledgement of Pam’s translational research on respiratory disease in Aboriginal children. The insights from this research are saving young lungs; and we are delighted to be able to leverage resources andcollaborate on community awareness of chronic wet cough. Congratulations Pam!
Congratulations to respiratory health clinician-researcher Dr Pamela Laird, who has won Allied Health Researcher of the Year at the WA Excellence in Allied Health Awards. The Department of Health (WA Health)-supported awards recognise the phenomenal work of allied health workers across Western Australia who have made an outstanding contribution to their field. Dr Laird is a paediatric respiratory physiotherapist at Perth Children’s Hospital and a Senior Clinician Research Fellow with the Wal-yan Respiratory Research Centre at The Kids – a powerhouse partnership between The Kids Research Institute Australia, Perth Children’s Hospital and Perth Children's Hospital Foundation. Her research is focused on reducing the chronic respiratory disease burden in Aboriginal children, especially the impact of the life-shortening ‘orphan disease’ of bronchiectasis and its precursor, chronic wet cough. Working closely with Aboriginal medical services, leaders and communities, she has provided world-first data on the prevalence of these conditions, contributed to national guidelines, and created highly accessible resources that, together with her research, have already helped save more than 1000 little lungs. The award adds to a great year for Dr Laird, who in August was named joint Early Career Researcher of the Year at the Premier’s Science Awards. Congratulations Dr Laird! Our CWC team attended the Aboriginal Health Conference on the weekend with this year’s theme “Circling the Fire: Connecting, Celebrating and Committing top Aboriginal Health”, embodying the spirit of unity, celebration, and dedication to improving Indigenous health outcomes. The opportunity to connect with community from across the state and engage in presentations, panel discussions, case study discussions and workshops was so valuable and empowers the team to continue their work in growing the community champion network of local people sharing the chronic wet cough message. Highlights of the conference were the keynote speakers this year “Mechelle Turvey and Keisha Calyun-Clarke” two very inspiring women!
