The 2024-25 Connecting Schools Grant is now open! Jointly funded by the Department of Transport, Western Australia and the Department of Education, Western Australia, Your Move Schools in WA are invited to apply for a grant to improve bike access, skills and infrastructure to help students be active and reduce car trips and parking demand around schools. A total pool of $225,000 is available, with grants ranging from $1,000 to $20,000 for a variety of offerings including student bike education, Safety School excursions, bike and scooter related parking infrastructure and much more! The Australian Council on Smoking and Health is currently gathering insights from parents about vaping and their teenagers to advocate for more support. Nearly $200,000 has been awarded to WA Centre for Rural Health at UWA for a research project that will develop a tool to more effectively measure mental health and wellbeing in the Aboriginal community of Mullewa. The research project called Tharlbarra Maga: Developing a Strong Head, Strong Mind Measure is one of four projects that received funding from Healthway’s 2023 Targeted Research Round, which called for research projects that focused on new and innovative ways to measure health behaviours. Thank you to our arts partners, local government, Cancer Council Western Australia, Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and the Department of Education, Western Australia representatives who attended our workshop on The Arts Against Vaping – Youth Engagement Initiative last week. This new Initiative aims to find innovative ways to deliver impactful messages about the effects of vaping to children and young people taking part in the arts. Given the successes achieved though addressing mental health and wellbeing through the arts, we are now looking at delivering vaping prevention and intervention activities. Thank you to the Australian Health Promotion Association for hosting us alongside our national and New Zealand friends for a plenary session at the National Health Promotion Symposium last week. We held very insightful discussions on our challenges and opportunities for the health promotion workforce, impacting change at system level and improving awareness of the commercial determinants of health. We look forward to working together to support health outcomes and tackling significant health promotion challenges together. #healthpromotion #AHPASymposium2024
