One of the standout sessions at EECON 2024 is 𝗨𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀, chaired by Yiannis Mastrogiannis from Essential Energy. This session will explore innovative technologies that are transforming network operations, enhancing stability, and boosting the capacity for renewable energy integration. Four expert presentations will cover topics ranging from inertia support in wind farms to dynamic connection solutions for distributed energy resources. 𝗜𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗮 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗚𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝘀 Shi Shi Qian & Dr. Shabir AHMADYAR from KPMG. Renewable Energy Sources (RES) are increasingly challenging the stability of power system frequencies because their power electronic interfaces lack inertia. This presentation examines the role of different technologies in addressing this issue, including synchronous condensers with flywheels, synthetic inertia from wind farms using grid-following inverters, and traditional synchronous generators. The results of these approaches are then benchmarked. 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 Michael Rushmer & Nick Yates from Flexity Pty Ltd. A common cause of network disruptions is inrush current, which happens when transformers are energised without proper control as renewable energy sites are connected to the grid. By using modern digital control techniques, we can operate breakers at grid connection substations with precise timing, minimising inrush current and its associated disruptions. This presentation will evaluate three cutting-edge switching methods that help achieve this. 𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗩 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 Jude Suchithra, Dr. Duane Robinson & Dr. Amin Rajabi from the University of Wollongong. Efficient power flow management and precise voltage regulation through coordinated control schemes make it easier to adopt rooftop PV systems and boost the hosting capacity of electricity distribution networks. This paper introduces a coordinated voltage control scheme and evaluates how a deep reinforcement learning-based approach enhances hosting capacity. 𝗦𝗘𝗣𝟮 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 Alex Guinman & Jaimee Hosking from Energy Queensland. To enable dynamic connections of distributed energy resources (DER), Ergon Energy Network and Energex have recently implemented a SEP2 Utility Server as a centralised system for registering customer connections. End-to-end testing has been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of SEP2-compliant devices, and the presentation will share key findings and recommendations.
