What a fantastic week at Seafood Directions 2024 in Hobart with Seafood Industry Australia! We started with an excellent site tour of Tassal Group's Shepherd lease, and a visit to their automatic feeding room – what they are doing in this space is very impressive. The conference was packed with so many great moments, from insightful talks and panel discussions to meeting incredible people who share our passion for seafood. It was fantastic to see so many voices come together, all focused on the future of our industry. We loved sharing what we do at Endeavour Foods and learning from others in our space. To top off the week, we are so proud to announce that our General Manager, Sophie Sharland won the National Seafood Industry Young Achiever Award! This reward is testament to her incredible commitment to Endeavour Foods and the seafood industry as a whole. Sophie recently completed her MBA and we look forward having her back on deck to bring fresh ideas and energy to everything we do. We couldn’t be prouder! A special shoutout to Umar Nguyen for winning the Promotion Award, an incredible recognition of her efforts in championing our industry! She has been a big supporter of ours for a long time and we are so grateful to have her as part of our seafood family. #SeafoodIndustryAwards2024 #SeafoodDirections2024

🦞 It's Sustainable Seafood Week! 🦞 A week to celebrate the WA Fisheries leading the world standard in sustainable fishing. Did you know the Western Rock Lobster Fishery were the first-ever MSC-certified fishery in the world? This was given in recognition of their high environmental values and sustainable practices that have been maintained over the last 24 years. Strict requirements include quotas, minimum size requirements, closed areas and a ban on catching breeding females. Remarkably, they've been collecting data on puerulus (tiny lobsters) since the 1960s. This rich trove of information enables the fishery to accurately predict adult lobster populations four years in advance. In turn, this foresight allows for precise adjustment of catch limits, securing a sustainable future for our marine life. #sustainableseafoodweek Western Australian Fishing Industry Council (WAFIC)

🦪 It's Sustainable Seafood Week! 🦪 This week we’re highlighting the WA Fisheries who are making waves in sustainability. Leeuwin Coast are Australia's first carbon-neutral aquaculture business, harvesting Rock Oysters and Akoya out of the waters surrounding Albany. Their aquaculture system uses commercial hatcheries to breed spat (baby oysters) meaning they don’t deplete natural stocks. Once in the water each oyster filters over 100L of water, per day. The dropper lines they hang in the ocean for Akoya to grow on also create a habitat in the ocean, almost like a floating reef. This provides a home for all manner of marine life. Leeuwin Coast also invest in and support world-class marine conservation research, and where possible, have eliminated plastics within their business while continuously investigating ways of reducing plastics in everything they do! #sustainableseafoodweek Western Australian Fishing Industry Council (WAFIC)

🐙 It's Sustainable Seafood Week! 🐙 A week to celebrate the WA Fisheries who are doing great things in sustainability. The sustainable practices of the WA Octopus Fishery have made them one of the first Octopus fisheries in the world to hold MSC certification, with the independent assessment finding the fishery to be well managed with healthy stocks and harvest strategies in place. A patented trigger-trap created by Fremantle Octopus Group also allows them to effectively target octopus and drastically reduce any by-catch, setting a new global sustainability standard. With a meticulous approach to conservation, they measure and record all catches for academic purposes, and ensure the safe release of any octopus deemed too small. #sustainableseafoodweek

🛥️ It's Sustainable Seafood Week! 🛥️ This week we’ll be highlighting WA fisheries that supply us with world-class, sustainable seafood. The Abrolhos Island and Mid-West Scallop Fishery has recently achieved MSC certification and is the first scallop fishery in Australia to gain this certification. The independent assessment found the fishery was well-managed and supported by strong science from the WA Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development. Management measures include a limited number of licenses, set seasonal closures, specified gear types, and catch limits determined by an annual stock survey. The Rottnest Island Scallop Fishery works closely with DPIRD to ensure their harvests are sustainable, with yearly surveys to determine the health of the local scallop population. They are also a part of a Fisheries Research and Development Corporation project that concentrates on rearing juvenile scallops to be released in the wild that will enhance the overall health of the scallop fishery. #sustainableseafoodweek Western Australian Fishing Industry Council (WAFIC)

🦐 It's Sustainable Seafood Week! 🦐 This week we’ll be highlighting WA fisheries that supply us with world-class, sustainable seafood. The Exmouth Gulf and Shark Bay Prawn Fisheries are the two most valuable prawn fisheries in WA. They catch Tiger, King, Endeavour & Banana Prawns using sustainable, low opening, otter prawn trawl systems. In these regions of ecological importance, the prawn boats are only allowed to fish in certain areas to protect sensitive habitats, with the majority of fishing taking place on sandy seafloors. The WA Department of Fisheries Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) also conducts pre-season surveys to gauge catch predictions while checking the overall health of the prawn populations. These sustainable practices coupled with seasonal restrictions and catch limits all lead to healthier prawn populations in Exmouth and Shark Bay waters. In 2015, with the help of a $14.5 million WA Government program, the Exmouth Gulf and Shark Bay Prawn Fisheries obtained MSC certification; a 3rd party, independent sustainability accreditation that lets chefs and consumers know their seafood is sustainably sourced. 📸 Correia Fishing Co. 🐟 It's Sustainable Seafood Week! 🐟 A time to celebrate the WA fisheries that supply us with world-class, sustainable seafood. This week we'll be highlighting a number of WA fisheries who are setting a world-wide standard in sustainability. How Can Primary Seafood Producers Commit to Sustainability? ✓ monitor species populations to prevent overfishing ✓ reduce by-catch and maintain stock levels ✓ reduce or eliminate impact on the marine environment ✓ implement effective management to ensure a healthy marine ecology for the future ✓ work together with government agencies by recording and sharing catch data. The WA Department of Primary Industries & Regional Development reports on the status of each fishery which has allowed WA’s significant commercial fisheries to undergo independent assessment and achieve environmental certification under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. ✓ by being audited and receiving certification by independent organisations such as the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), Friends of the Sea (FoS) or the Australian Conservation Foundation's (ACF) Sustainable Australian Seafood Assessment Program Endeavour Foods have been supporting local sustainable seafood producers for over 23 years. As passionate advocates for sustainability, we're committed to championing not only the high-quality produce that comes from responsible fisheries, but also the very ocean ecosystems that sustain them. 📸 Brown Dog Fishing Co. #sustainableseafoodweek Western Australian Fishing Industry Council (WAFIC)
