According to a report in The Australian Financial Review, the Australian Hotels Association plans to funnel tens of thousands of dollars into major political party candidates in electorates facing strong challenges from independents. We've joined the Alliance for Gambling Reform to call for an end to all political donations from alcohol and gambling companies.

Australia's leading not-for-profit organisation working towards an Australia free from alcohol harms.
About us
The Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE) is the leading not-for-profit organisation working towards an Australia free from alcohol harms. We approach this through developing evidence-informed policy, enabling people-powered advocacy and delivering health promotion programs. Australians are impacted by alcohol harm every day, including through injury, violence, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and chronic diseases such as cancer. Far too many Australians die each year because of alcohol. By working together, we can change this. Working with local communities, values-aligned organisations, health professionals and researchers across the country, we strive to improve the health and wellbeing of everyone in Australia. FARE has established a work culture where people are valued and supported, where wellbeing is prioritised and where we are empowered to collectively contribute to meaningful change. FARE was recently acknowledged for our work culture and awarded as one of the Best Workplaces for 2021 receiving the Your Voice Best Workplace Award 2021 and The Your Voice Change Champion Award 2021.

Donations from the alcohol and gambling industries should be removed from our politics. Full stop. News surfaced last week that harmful industry lobbyists are planning to make MORE donations in the lead up to this year's federal election. What's the reason this time? To fuel votes to the major parties who are facing strong challenges from independents in certain electorates. The Australian Financial Review reports gambling and alcohol industry group, the 'Australian Hotels Association', plans to donate tens of thousands of dollars in the coming weeks before the election, in an attempt to influence election outcomes and stifle future public health reforms that the community is calling out for. Our community deserves democratic processes without interference. Our community's health and wellbeing must come before alcohol and gambling industry profits. 📣 I think it’s obvious just how excited I am, but I am also incredibly honoured to officially be a member of the skilled and passionate Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE) team as a Lived Experience Advisor. 📣 FARE has just received a best workplace award for 2025 for their exceptional dedication to creating an Australia that is healthier and safer from all forms of alcohol harms. While I continue the work I have been doing within the family violence sector and at Safe and Equal my new role at FARE will support my passion for family violence prevention and also allow me to expand on the work I have been doing to highlight the intersection between alcohol and gender-based violence and lobbying for sensible reforms to reduce and prevent community harm. Did you know that alcohol can impact your kidney function? On #WorldKidneyDay, we’re looking at how alcohol is linked to one of the major risk factors for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): high blood pressure. Your blood pressure increases temporarily if you drink alcohol, and regular high-risk drinking can cause ongoing high blood pressure, as: 🩸 Alcohol increases levels of hormones that cause arteries to constrict 🩸 Alcohol impacts the nervous system and receptors in blood vessels that regulate blood pressure 🩸 Alcohol boosts the production of cortisol, a stress hormone that can increase your heart rate and blood pressure Alcohol use also contributes to other CKD risk factors, like diabetes and obesity. We’d like to thank our friends at Kidney Health Australia for their support on this content. Simon marketed wine for a living for nearly 20 years. For the last four years, after leaving the alcohol industry, Simon has been alcohol-free. It’s not the first time Simon attempted to cut out alcohol. But alcohol’s role in social events and in his previous line of work made it incredibly hard to escape. After looking into how alcohol can affect health and wellbeing, Simon reflected on the positive impact of his previous efforts - and his sober “muscle” became stronger than ever. “All of these [health benefits] stacked up and when I looked back on them I thought, there was one common factor in that - I'd cut alcohol out,” Simon said. Simon has shared his story for the Voices of Change project: https://lnkd.in/gACDRgi9 #VoicesOfChange #Community #SoberCurious #AlcoholAwareness

This week we bid farewell to our CEO Caterina Giorgi, a much-loved member of the FARE team for over a decade. Plus, new research has uncovered that the alcohol industry is flooding social media with alcohol ads at times of high harms, evidenced by the latest Victorian ambulance data.

"Now, I feel like if I don’t want to drink alcohol, I don’t have to - and that’s been quite liberating.” Janani stopped drinking alcohol in the last year after she noticed how peer pressure influenced her drinking. Now, Janani orders a mocktail whenever she's out with friends - and this has helped support her mental health and wellbeing. Check out our chat with Janani and other people in Tasmania who have chosen to cut back or cut out alcohol in a blog for the Be Nice To Brain campaign on the FARE website: https://lnkd.in/gqh5WZnh Be Nice To Brain supports all Tasmanians to cut back or cut out alcohol to improve their wellbeing - and raise awareness of the Australian Alcohol Guidelines.
