The difference teachers make to our young people can’t be overstated. And today, on #WorldTeachersDay2024, we acknowledge the brilliant contribution teachers make to our community. Education, learning and outreach activities are a big part of the WA Museum's work and we encourage all teachers to visit the WA Museum's education program hub to find out more about available student programs and professional learning opportunities. A big thank you to all our teachers for their incredible passion, dedication, and for all the ways in which they inspire our next generations!

A fascination with the past. An understanding of the present. A passion for the future.
About us
The best structures are built on strong foundations. The Foundation for the WA Museum believes that museums should spark a love of learning in the next generation. They should nurture a fascination with the past, an understanding of the present, and a passion for the future – and inspire us all in unexpected ways. Importantly, they should influence and motivate young people to investigate the areas of science, technology, the arts and mathematics in the world around them. The Foundation for the WA Museum is an independent organisation that has been committed to securing the future of our state heritage since 1995.

On Tuesday, Dr Mikael Siversson, Western Australian Museum’s Head of Earth and Planetary Science, took us on a dive into the deep past during his lecture “The Secret Life of Fossils” at Lawson Flats. Mikael vividly described the WA Museum’s fieldtrips hunting for marine vertebrates from the mid-Cretaceous period, and their discoveries of plesiosaurs, ichthyosaurs and LOTS of shark teeth! Thank you to everyone who joined us for this fascinating lecture, and thanks to the team at Lawson Flats for hosting us. 📷 Kate Hulett

Are you intrigued by fossils? Then join us at Lawson Flats next Tuesday, when Western Australian Museum's Dr Mikael Siversson (Head of Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences) will chat about some of the fossil specimens held in the WA Museum’s vast fossil collection. Think 380-million-year-old Gogo fish from the Kimberley, 95-million-year-old sharks from the Southern Carnarvon Basin, and megafauna from caves on the Nullarbor Plain! Tickets are just $15.

“Not only has she committed herself to leading the charge into space, she’s educating, informing and, above all, inspiring generations.” We can’t sum up Katherine Bennell-Pegg's visit to Western Australia better than Western Australian Museum CEO Alec Coles. The Foundation for the WA Museum is proud to have worked with so many amazing partners here in WA to make Katherine’s visit possible. A big thank you in particular to the Forrest Research Foundation, the International Space Centre and of course Wesfarmers and the WA Museum Boola Bardip! 📽️ PerthVideo.com.au
“Space is what we want our society to be in the coming years and decades ahead. It’s investing for our next generation to ensure they have opportunity.” - Katherine Bennell-Pegg Australian Astronaut Katherine touched thousands of lives when she visited WA, furthering the understanding of researchers, students, industry and business in the critical benefits of space research and development. The Foundation for the WA Museum generously produced this wonderful video of her journey across WA. One day, in a live Q&A session with 12 schools from Joseph Banks SC Katherine reached over 6,000 students via livestream from East Kimberley College to Denmark Primary School (fun fact - that’s 16 times the distance from Earth to the International Space Station at its closest). Many wonderful space partners helped make this happen, including Western Australian Museum Boola Bardip and their CEO Alec Coles Coles who provided the opening voiceover on this videos followed by Coralie Bishop, CEO FWAM Forrest Research Foundation | Government House WA | Australian Space Agency | Lions Eye Institute | Curtin University | Nine News Perth | SKAO in Australia | CSIRO | Australian Women Pilots' Association | Southern Cross Austereo | The West Australian | 7NEWS Australia | Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Midwest and Wheatbelt | Octagon Theatre | and of course The University of Western Australia Danail Obreschkow | James Arvanitakis | Keegan Buzza | Fogarty Foundation | Liz Smith | Sinéad Mangan | Yvonne Ardley | Clive Bingwa | John Flint | Ben O'Shea | Sascha Schediwy | Lorenzo Faraone | Harvey Millar | Ryan Lister | Ian Small | Jarryd Gardner | Sarah Pearce | Angela Teale | Rebecca Wheadon | Samuel Forbes | Tim Young |

Today is #WorldHabitatDay! This year's theme highlights the important role young people play in creating a better urban future. The Western Australian Museum encourages conversations about inclusive urban planning and sustainable development through events like "The Festival of Urbanism – Public (Sub) Urbanism: People, Place and Power", to be held on 9 October. Due to the importance of this topic within our community, this event is now sold out! 👏🎉 While the past and present are on display daily at the WA Museum, the future is for all of us to shape. As part of the FameLab science communication training program, all finalists gather in Perth for two days of intensive workshop activities before the Final. It's the culmination of the training program that started in April - having been expertly delivered by Emma from our FameLab partner Comm-it : Communication and training solutions with science. Here are some photos from Day 2 of the workshop. The program included a session on entrepreneurial thinking with Toby Swingler from @ceriwesternaustralia, as well as an improv session with Aden Date from Only the Human to help the finalists calm their nerves before they got ready to hit the stage. Thank you to James Arvanitakis and Forrest Research Foundation for giving the finalists a home away from home and linking them into the Perth academic scene, and thank you to all our other FameLab partners for supporting this unique science communication training program.
