🌟 Speaker Spotlight: Anjali Sharma, Campaigner 🌟 Anjali Sharma (she/her) is 20 years old. At 16, she became the lead litigant of Sharma vs Environment Minister, a class action legal case which argued that the Environment Minister owes all young people a duty of care to protect them from the impacts of climate change. In 2021, she was successful, but following an appeal from the Minister, this ruling was overturned. However, Anjali continued the campaign, now calling to have this duty legislated through Federal Parliament. Anjali aims to raise awareness about the disproportionate impacts of climate change, particularly towards young people and people of colour. “The United Nations cannot reform itself. This is a job for all of us.” - Penny Wong, Australia's Foreign Minister In her latest article, our Head of Government Relations, Clare Beaton-Wells, unpacks this powerful statement and its implications for global cooperation. Fresh from her experience as a Special Youth Representative at the UN Summit, Clare offers a unique perspective on the UN's 'Pact for the Future'. Is this landmark commitment truly a turning point, or just another well-intentioned declaration? Clare dives deep into: 1. The potential of the newly announced UN Envoy for Future Generations 2. Australia's role in shaping UN reform and global policy 3. The crucial link between international commitments and local action 🌍 Drawing on her firsthand observations, Clare challenges us to consider how we can transform multilateralism from 'high-stakes theatre' into effective, long-term solutions for intergenerational fairness. Discover why 97% of Australians believe in policies that consider future generations, and how this aligns with global efforts to secure a sustainable future for all. 📖 Read the full article to understand why the UN's call for a new global consensus matters to each of us, and how it could reshape our approach to long-term policy making. https://ow.ly/ei4F50TPnW2 #UNReform #FutureGenerations #GlobalPolicy #IntergenerationalFairness #AusPo

Myth: "Future generations policy only benefits young people." Reality: Future generations policy is inherently intergenerational. It’s not just for the youth—it’s for everyone. The goal is to achieve fairness and inclusive wellbeing across all age groups, from children to our oldest citizens. For example, policies that invest in public transportation, healthcare, or sustainable energy benefit people of all ages. Whether it’s ensuring that future generations inherit a livable planet or that today's older adults have access to improved healthcare and mobility, these policies create a ripple effect of positive change. By addressing today's challenges with the future in mind, we are building a society that supports equitable opportunities for all age groups and ensures long-term sustainability. It's about fostering an inclusive, just, and resilient society that works for everyone—young, old, and every generation in between. #FutureGenerations #PolicyForAll #Sustainability #InclusiveWellbeing #IntergenerationalFairness #PublicPolicy #FoundationsForTomorrow #SocialImpact #LongTermSolutions

🚨 News: Future Generations Act Proposed in ACT Election 2024 🚨 Exciting developments are unfolding in Canberra! Thomas Emerson and the Independents for Canberra have just announced their proposal for a Future Generations Act as part of their platform for the upcoming ACT Election. 📰 What’s in the proposal? A Future Generations Commissioner will be introduced to ensure current policies don’t compromise the ability of future generations to meet their needs. The legislation is based on the Wales model passed in 2015, which provides a “legally binding common purpose” for intergenerational equity. Emerson highlights key concerns driving this initiative, including climate change, housing affordability, and the cost-of-living crisis, which are leaving the next generation feeling hopeless about their future. 🔑 Why this matters: This bold move challenges the short-term political mindset, focusing on long-term thinking and ensuring future Australians are protected. As Emerson noted, young people increasingly feel that political leaders are failing to make decisions with their long-term interests in mind. At Foundations for Tomorrow, we strongly support efforts like these that prioritise sustainability, intergenerational fairness, and the protection of future generations. The introduction of a Future Generations Commissioner could transform how our society plans for the future, making this a game-changer for Australia. Stay tuned as we watch this unfold—it’s an exciting step towards a brighter future! 🌏 To learn more, read here: https://lnkd.in/guNj9zgB #BreakingNews #ACTElection2024 #FutureGenerationsAct #LongTermThinking #Sustainability #IntergenerationalEquity #FoundationsForTomorrow

At the Building Hopeful Futures Festival , our Head of Government Relations, Clare Beaton-Wells, represented our commitment to championing long-term thinking and intergenerational fairness. Organised by the School of International Futures (SOIF) and FutureFriends, brought together over 100 visionaries, changemakers, and foresight practitioners from more than 40 countries. Here are three key insights Clare shared during the "Building Futures Generations Movements" panel. 1️⃣ Intergenerational fairness as a transformative principle: • It's not just a policy lens, but a fundamental shift in how we perceive our role in shaping the future. • This principle carries a powerful message of hope and optimism, essential in today's often pessimistic news cycles. • It has the unique ability to unite diverse generations, fostering powerful coalitions for positive change. 2️⃣ The ecosystem of change for intergenerational fairness: • Success hinges on the interplay of three critical factors: 🔑 Engaged citizenship: Empowering individuals to actively participate in shaping long-term policies. 🔑 Strong political leadership: Encouraging decision-makers to prioritize future generations' needs. 🔑 Systemic support: Nurturing sectors and communities that are equipped to think and act with the future in mind. 3️⃣ Seizing the momentum at this policy tipping point: • #SummitoftheFuture is not an endpoint, but a launchpad for continued action. • FFT is committed to building on this momentum, pushing for ambitious, future-focused policies beyond the summit. • We're dedicated to fostering ongoing intergenerational dialogue to ensure a more sustainable world for all. We extend our heartfelt thanks to SOIF, Cat Tully, and all the participants who are joining us in this crucial work. Stay tuned for more updates on how FFT is turning these insights into action, and join us in our mission to ensure a fairer, more sustainable world for generations to come. #BHFF2024 #OurCommonFuture #SummitOfTheFuture #GlobalGoals #IntergenerationalFairness #FutureGenerations #LongTermThinking #PolicyInnovation #FoundationsForTomorrow
