A while back I attended a session with former Wallabies player Ben Darwin, who has spent years studying team cohesion with his company GAIN LINE Analytics. His research shows that teams who have played together longer consistently outperform teams of individual superstars. One example stood out to me: when the U.S. Olympic basketball team, filled with NBA legends, played a scrimmage against a group of college players. The pros were more talented, yet they lost. The reason? The NBA players were individual stars, while the college players were a team. Ben then took this thinking into business and found that companies where executive teams had worked together longer saw better stock performance. Cohesion isn’t just for sport - it drives success everywhere. Then he put us to the test with a team problem solving challenge. Over a series of rounds some teams changed and the problem changed for other teams. I will leave the details for Ben to explain, but the lessons we learned were bang-on what happens when organisations roll out new systems with project members from the business, IT, Vendors, and sub-contractors. We first need to learn how to work together as a project team and understand the unique dynamics that are taking place, form a common language, and eliminate the variety of assumptions. When the system goes live, we take away the old system that had problems someone has previously solved (we call these work arounds) and replace it with a new one. Our business case sets an expectation that people will work faster and better. But just like in Ben's challenge, inefficiency is inevitable at first. The key is setting the right expectations, allowing time for teams to learn, and focusing on long-term cohesion rather than short-term speed. Change management isn’t just about technology, it’s about helping teams find their rhythm, adapt, and build trust. Because success isn’t just about having the right pieces - it’s about knowing how to build together. #ChangeManagement #TeamCohesion #BusinessTransformation #Leadership #Collaboration #UserAdoption #OrganisationalCulture #ProcessImprovement #Innovation #Efficiency #SAP #GainLine #BenDarwin
