Last Thursday evening, we had the honour of hosting the Annual Gold Coast Academy of Sports Awards Evening. This distinguished event celebrated the incredible athletes who have participated in our diverse programs over the past year. With 2024 being a particularly active year, over 620 athletes have competed across various sports. A huge congratulations to Tori and Lachy for their outstanding achievements and dedication, as they received the Male and Female Athlete of the Year awards! 𝙏𝙤𝙧𝙞 𝙍𝙪𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙡 - 𝙏𝙚𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙨 Tori has excelled in tennis this year! She placed 5th in the 2024 Australian 14/u Grasscourt National Championships and represented Australia at the 14/u Wimbledon event, finishing 13th. Tori also finished 2nd in the Australian 14/u Clay Court Championships and helped Queensland win the Australian 15/u National Teams Championship. She won the 14/u Europe event in the Netherlands and represented Australia at the 14/u World Junior Tennis Finals in Czechia. Tori is the national 14/u hard court singles and doubles champion and is ranked #2 in Australia for her birth year. 𝙇𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙮 𝘿𝙤𝙣𝙣𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙮 - 𝙋𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙡𝙚𝙗𝙖𝙡𝙡 Lachy's passion for sport led him from soccer to Pickleball, where he has thrived after an injury prompted the switch. Sponsored by Hustle Pickleball and KDV, he has achieved significant milestones: • Queensland U18 Open Singles Champion (PPA Tour Australia 2024, Gold Coast • Silver in U18 Open Doubles at the WPC World Pickleball Championships in Bali with teammate Teak • Triple Crown at the Australian Pickleball Championships 2024 (KDV Sport), winning gold in U18 Open Doubles, Mixed Doubles, and Singles His accomplishments have earned him the #1 Junior Australian Ranking! With the BMX State Championships on the horizon this September at the iconic Nerang BMX track, we've seized the opportunity to offer riders a comprehensive preparation platform. The first session kicked off yesterday under perfectly sunny skies! This program is more than just a primer for the track before the State Championships; it's a comprehensive program aimed at enhancing the rider's performance. With riders attending from all across the state, they will acquire critical knowledge of the track's technical and tactical details, giving them a competitive advantage when it's most crucial thanks to coaches Dale Percy, Kane Gibbons and Kyle Hill. Over the next three weekends, the program will further support riders in all areas of their development, offering a unique opportunity to prepare not only for the State Championships but also to build a solid foundation for Nationals. We had a fantastic start last night to our 8-week Ignite Netball Program, in partnership with the Bond University Bull Sharks Netball! The next 7 weeks will be filled with both skill development and personal growth opportunities, emphasizing the importance of knowledge both on and off the court. Our participants are already showing great promise, and we are excited to see their progress over the coming weeks. Bonnie Hancock, a celebrated Gold Coast ironwoman and record-breaking ocean paddler, has been appointed to the Board of the Gold Coast Academy of Sport (GCAS). Known for her nine-year career as a professional surf lifesaving ironwoman and her distinction as the fastest and youngest person to circumnavigate Australia on a surf ski, Bonnie is a true legend of the sea. The Academy extends its congratulations to Ellie Beer on her selection for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games! 🏅 Ellie represented Australia in the women's 4x400 meter relay at the Tokyo Olympics and has now qualified for her second Olympic Games, competing in the women's 400 meters. We were fortunate to have Ellie participate in the Academy's Future Stars program in 2017, where we were honoured to award her as Female Athlete of the Year. It has been a pleasure to witness her journey toward becoming an Olympic athlete and we wish her all the very best over in Paris! We are always thrilled to hear about the successes of our past program participants! Maddy was involved in our Future Stars program in 2022 and our Extension program in 2023. She has gone from strength to strength in her sport recently having represented Australia over in Fiji at the Oceania Athletics Championships. Meet Reuben, a member of this year's Future Stars program! Reuben is deeply passionate about baseball and is constantly seeking ways to enhance his skills and overall performance as a developing athlete. Reuben's dedication and hard work have led to numerous achievements throughout the year. One of his most notable accomplishments is his recent selection to represent Australia on the U14 team.
