This moment surely marks the apogee of heartless capitalism. The richest man in the world has struck out the largest aid program of the world’s richest country—denouncing USAid as ‘evil.’ With around 40% of the global development budget now on hold, millions of the world’s poorest communities and their governments face the urgent challenge of finding alternative support to avert catastrophe. Created in 1961 by JFK through Executive Order, USAID was defended by him as a “powerful source of strength” that enabled global stability and freedom. Yet 64 years later, it faces dismantling under a subsequent Executive Order justified by misinformation, prejudice, and an alarming shift in values. At the same time, rising tariffs and the breakdown of cooperative trade threaten to further deepen global inequality. For those of us in the work of backing and supporting leaders, organisations and the communities to support the most marginalised, under-served or threatened, this moment comes as a warning to never to be too reliant, or complacent, or too sure. GoodWolf's namesake is reference to the Cherokee parable about two wolves—one representing greed and self-interest and the other compassion and generosity. The one that wins is the one we choose to feed. It’s a New Year, and change is already sweeping through like a cool change in Summer. Whether it’s a flurry of Executive Orders being signed on The Resolute Desk, a Ceasefire being agreed or La Niña being called again late in the Season, organisations and foundations in the change business might need to revisit their assumptions, and harden their resolve. As famously captured by Beckard & Gleicher, the change formula was defined as: D = dissatisfaction with status quo V = vision for what is possible F = first concrete steps towards change The product of these factors above must be greater than R = the resistance you will face in effecting change.
