About us

The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (GMCT) is classified as a Class A Cemetery Trust under the Cemeteries and Crematoria Act 2003 (Vic). It was established on 1 March 2010 after amendments to the Act consolidated eight existing cemetery Trusts into one organisation. GMCT serves its communities by providing cemetery and crematoria services and maintaining 20 public cemeteries, crematoria and mausolea within the northern, eastern and western suburbs of metropolitan Melbourne. As a statutory authority GMCT is held accountable for the money received from sales and services dedicated to cemetery purposes. The Minister responsible for the cemeteries sector is the State Minister for Health. The responsible department is the Department of Health (Cemeteries and Crematoria Regulation Unit). GMCT is governed by a Trust Committee (the Trust) that was also established under the Act. The members of the Trust are appointed by the Governor in Council on the recommendation of the Minister. The Trust currently comprises nine non-executive members, whose responsibilities include setting strategic direction, approving the annual budget, monitoring performance, ensuring compliance, developing policy, high-level stakeholder management and ensuring that an appropriate risk management framework is in place. Day-to-day management of the cemeteries within its control is delegated to the executive management under a team led by the CEO, subject to documented delegations.

  • What if cemeteries were places to be rather than spaces to fill? This is our vision for our cemeteries and memorial parks—both old and new. And to achieve this, we are guided by principles of placemaking, biodiversity, cultural and religious diversity, and health and wellbeing, just to name a few. In this episode of ABC’s Big Ideas, Hamish Coates, Principal Designer at GMCT, discusses these principles and the key to unlocking cemeteries as spaces for the living. Listen here: https://lnkd.in/gCdCqtCy The episode features the first panel from the Six Feet Under: Design and Death Symposium, presented by Open House Melbourne, for #MelbourneDesignWeek earlier this year. #design #urbandesign #placemaking #landscapearchitecture #futurecemetery

  • Matt is a Client Services Consultant at GMCT, and when our skin check appointments came up, he booked himself in for a check-up. “I’d noticed I had a lump on my ear…but it wasn’t going away. So, when the skin checks came up, I got a referral to go and see a specialist, and I ended up having four skin cancers. I might have been one of those guys that said, ‘Oh yeah, it’s nothing’.”

  • Community consultation on the name of the new memorial park in Harkness is now open. We’re seeking feedback from our stakeholders and community on the proposed name: Harkness Memorial Park. Consultation is open until 29 October 2024, and we welcome all views. Following the consultation period, we’ll review all feedback and share the next steps. Have your say by completing the survey at our community engagement site: https://lnkd.in/gDjTMGP6 Why Harkness Memorial Park? Building a culture where health, safety, and inclusion are part of your organisation’s DNA takes time, dedication, and resources. But most importantly, it takes people with shared values.    In recognition of National Safe Work Month, I am incredibly proud to share just a small part of some of the amazing things we’re doing at GMCT to celebrate one another, and to keep mentally and physically safe while supporting the community.     Please watch the video below to hear from the incredible people who help build our GMCT culture each day—our team. Their words speak volumes about what being part of the GMCT family means.      https://lnkd.in/g8qGDiM5     #memorialparks #cemeteries #NationalSafeWorkMonth #safety #inclusion

  • As a cemetery trust, our responsibilities extend beyond caring for the dead and the places where they rest. We also have a duty to preserve and share the extraordinary stories and cultural heritage of the people and places in our care. At GMCT, this work ranges from data rectification projects that transform old handwritten documents into digital archives to our Discover Cemeteries app, which shares stories of significant people interred on our sites. To celebrate the AFL Grand Final this week, we’re remembering the AFL legend and Essendon player and coach, John Coleman (1928-1973). One of only two Australian rules players to average more than five goals a game, he is honoured by the Coleman Medal, which is awarded to the highest goal-kicker each year in the AFL. Today, John Coleman is remembered with a plaque under a beautiful tree in Fawkner Memorial Park, where he is interred. #discovercemeteries #melbournehistory #history #heritage

  • Our staff care deeply. You don’t find yourself working for a cemetery trust if you don’t. We are a workforce that cares for people dealing with the reality of loss and grief, every day. And this care and compassion naturally extends to one another as well. To recognise R U OK? Day this year, we wanted to give our teams an intentional space to take a break from work, catch up, and open a door for those meaningful conversations – over a cup of coffee. At GMCT, we are committed to normalising conversations about mental health and fostering a culture where everyone feels safe and comfortable reaching out for support when they need it. Our coffee carts, which run monthly across our worksites, are an excellent opportunity for our staff to take a beat and ask R U OK?, all year round. #RUOKDay2024 #RUOKanyday #workculture #care #compassion

  • It’s almost time to break ground! We’re pleased to announce that construction for the new memorial park in Harkness will commence in the second half of 2025, following significant progress with our Stage 1A plans. The park will develop over several stages to meet the community's evolving needs, starting with essential services and infrastructure. We want to thank the site’s Traditional Owners and local community members, whose ongoing involvement and input have been invaluable in shaping the plans to reflect the values and aspirations of those it will serve. Our Chief Built Environment Officer James Reid says, “We’re grateful for the community's engagement and contributions – together we are creating an inclusive space that we believe will hold deep meaning and significance for everyone who visits.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/guVevzfT Want to keep up to date with the project? • When given space and support to do so, LGBTQIA+ young people thrive. Today is Wear it Purple Day, a day of Pride and celebration, and an opportunity to support LGBTQIA+ young people in our lives and communities. Yesterday, our teams gathered in person and online across multiple sites to share some pizza and hear from two Trans young people, advocates and leaders Mac Zamani (he/him) and Frankie Mazzone (she/her). With discussion moderated by our Chief Operations & People Officer Dimi Patitsas (she/her), we heard about their journeys growing up in Australia, their passions and the people who inspire them. We also learned about the importance of inclusion from an intergenerational perspective, and how we all have a role and responsibility to show up and stand up in support of young LGBTQIA+ young people. Thank you to Transcend Australia, a community organisation that supports families of Trans and gender diverse young people, who were present onsite yesterday to support Frankie and Mac. We wish Mac, Frankie, and all the LGBTQIA+ youth in our GMCT family and beyond a happy Wear it Purple Day! • From burial operations and horticulture to digital and finance: How do you unite a workforce with such a variety of roles and expertise under one mission? With nearly 300 employees working across 19 locations, we’re constantly thinking about and improving the way we work together. One way we’re doing this is through staff tours. Our horticulture team offers monthly tours of our northern region parks and cemeteries, which are open to anyone on the GMCT team. Last week, our CEO, Andrew Eriksen (right), joined the tour of Fawkner Memorial Park, Northern Memorial Park and the River Red Gum Precinct, hosted by Kris Filmer (left), Senior Supervisor of Horticulture Operations. These tours are great opportunities for our teams to connect, learn more about the range of projects happening in horticulture, and see their work in action. We’re incredibly proud of the strong diversity in knowledge and skills across our workforce. Each and every person has a role to play and is crucial in helping us achieve our mission: to provide the final care for your loved ones with dignity and kindness. #workforce #diversity #collaboration
