  • 🥾 We want to say a HUGE thank you to Merry People for donating 10 pairs of their iconic gumboots for our Green Connect Farm visitors and volunteers to use! 🥾 These beauties are perfect for walking around the farm when it's a bit wet – waterproof, comfortable and they come in a beautiful array of colours. Everyone loves them, and it seems the goats approve too. When we put the call out for boots, Merry People responded straight away with this generous donation, and we couldn’t be more grateful. Now our visitors can enjoy exploring the farm, rain or shine, with dry feet and a pop of colour 🌈 Thank you, Merry People! 🙌 🥾 #MerryPeople #GreenConnectFarm #SocialEnterprise #CommunitySupport #UrbanFarm #ThankYou

  • ♻️ What a great community initiative! 👏 Have you used the #ReturnandEarn bin baskets around Wollongong? 🗑️ As part of the Summer Cleansing Program, Wollongong City Council installed 136 bin baskets along the foreshore and in parks, making it easy for people to drop off bottles, cans, and cartons for others to collect and recycle through the Return and Earn 10c refund program. 🥤This program has been a huge success – helping to keep public spaces clean and providing a great way for local kids to earn a little pocket money. ♻️ We love seeing creative ways to get the whole community involved in reducing litter, encouraging recycling and protecting our beautiful Illawarra environment. Congratulations to all involved 👏 #Sustainability #Recycling #CommunityImpact #CircularEconomy

Have you used our return and earn bin baskets? As part of our Summer Cleansing Program, we’ve installed approximately 136 bin baskets along our foreshore and in parks. The idea is to allow visitors to drop off their bottles, cans and cartons for others who would like to collect them and recycle them through the Return and Earn 10c refund program. According to Mig Arellano, Council’s Waste Operations Coordinator, the baskets are a great asset for the community, especially kids. “We found that quite a lot of kids go around collecting for pocket money, which has been great. It’s just been really successful,” he said. This program was so successful it even snagged us an award! In 2024, Council’s project was crowned the winner of the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Tidy Towns Litter Prevention: Clean Community Award. We’re pleased to be able to offer a novel way of recycling for our community at some of our most popular outdoor locations, while also reducing litter.

  • January 26 is a deeply personal day for many Australians. For some, it’s a day of celebration. For others, it’s a time of mourning, reflection and resilience. It marks a moment in history that shaped our nation but also represents pain and loss for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. As a not-for-profit social enterprise supporting a diverse range of people, including many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, we recognise the power of individual stories and shared experiences. So, on January 26, in the spirit of reconciliation, let us take the time to listen, reflect and learn from one another. Together, we can embrace empathy, compassion and understanding as we work towards a future where all Australians can honour and celebrate our rich and diverse heritage. 📖 Learn more about the significance of the day and how we can create an inclusive day for all Australians and other ways to engage: 👉 History of the date: https://ow.ly/swuh50UMflq 👉 Approaching 26 January respectfully: https://ow.ly/n4BB50UMflu 👉 Events to attend: https://ow.ly/g8ZU50UMflv 👉 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations to support: https://ow.ly/HTrp50UMfls 👉 Amnesty International Toolkit: https://ow.ly/XI4a50UMflr #January26

  • Our Farm Manager, Emily Henderson, stopped by Wollongong City Council’s monthly native plant sale on Friday — and snapped a quick pic with Kylie Flament from the Social Enterprise Council of NSW & ACT (SECNA)! 📸 Thank you to the staff and volunteers at Wollongong Botanic Garden for propagating these plants 🌱 And to Wollongong City Council for this fantastic initiative, helping residents fill their gardens with affordable native species and supporting local biodiversity 🌏 #NativePlants #CommunityInitiatives #Biodiversity

Wollongong City Council holds a native plant sale for residents once a month, all propagated by Wollongong Botanic Garden staff and volunteers so locals can fill their gardens with local species. A big thank you to the team there for all their advice this morning, including Peter (left) who loaded me up with edible natives. And being Wollongong, I ran into a few familiar faces including the wonderful Emily Henderson from Green Connect Illawarra. Good on you, Wollongong City Council. Such a great initiative! PS the plants are very affordable and raise a bit of money for the botanic gardens, so it’s like a little social enterprise within council. I love it.

After years of research showing that Work Integrated Social Enterprises work, years of funding by philanthropists who saw the gaps and the opportunities, years of advocacy from social entrepreneurs, and more recently some payment-by-outcomes pilots from state and federal governments, I'm thrilled to see the Australian Government open a $10 million funding round for WISEs today. "The WorkFoundations grant opportunity aims to fund social enterprises and businesses who can provide tailored, paid employment placements with integrated wrap around services for job seekers facing challenging barriers to employment." It is a tiny fraction of the $1.9 billion the Australian government spends on employment services, but it is a step in the right direction and funding that has been a long time coming for the WISEs that have provide safe environments, work and life skills, social connections, confidence and purpose, and financial independence that people need until they are ready to join the mainstream workforce. I hope everyone who has been on this journey takes a little moment to celebrate today's milestone - and best of luck to all the WISEs who will be applying for this much-needed funding. #socialenterprise #workintegratedsocialenterprise Photo: a group of participants in our youth employment innovation challenge project from when I was at Green Connect Illawarra. We didn't realise it at the time, but it was possibly the first payment-by-outcomes employment funding for a WISE in Australia, thanks to the NSW Government.

  • 🌱 The Green Connect Landcare team has been making incredible progress restoring the subtropical rainforest remnant known as Berkeley Brush 🌳 📍 Berkeley Brush is part of the Illawarra Subtropical Rainforest, a rare and endangered ecological community. This remnant ecosystem is endemic to the Illawarra, meaning it’s the only place in the world where this plant community can be found. 🧤 Once heavily infested with invasive lantana and privet, the area is now being restored through weed removal, replanting native species, and maintaining this important ecosystem. 🦎 Berkeley Brush provides vital habitat for native birds, reptiles, insects, amphibians and mammals who rely on it for survival. 🌱 The lush and diverse groundcover shows the incredible difference the team is making. A big thank you to everyone contributing to this important project! 👏💪 #GreenConnect #BushRegeneration #IllawarraRainforest #Landcare #Sustainability Landcare Australia Landcare NSW

  • 🍅 "An urban farm growing fresh fruit and vegetables in the middle of suburbia is helping young men find their way in life." 🥕 Mitchell Garland and Thomas Basha, two of our incredible team members, recently shared their Green Connect journeys in this beautiful news story by WIN Television 🌟 🌱 Mitchell reflects, “I needed to do something after COVID – it was very hard to get into work. So I just decided to go into volunteering for something... After coming to Green Connect, I reconnected with some of my friends, and now I go to trivia and stuff like that. So yeah, good times!” 🌱 For Thomas, the rewards are found in the soil: “There's quite a bit of biodiversity and life, and it's just a really good way to nourish your soul. Working with the land and getting my hands dirty, I just find that inherently very rewarding.” 📽️ A big thank you to WIN News Illawarra for showcasing the stories behind our farm and the people who make it so special. Check out the video to hear more! 💚 #Sustainability #UrbanFarming #CommunityImpact #MeaningfulWork #GreenConnect
