About us
Wollongong is Australia's ninth largest city, with a population of over 200,000. Located 80 kilometres south of Sydney, Wollongong covers 714 square kilometres and occupies a narrow coastal strip bordered by the Royal National Park to the north, Lake Illawarra to the south, the Tasman Sea to the east and the Illawarra escarpment to the west. Our Strategic Direction and Priorities Council has a range of priorities that it must consider in its planning and allocation of resources. How we manage and address these will be guided by the Community Strategic Plan. Governance We have built an ethical and robust governance framework. Our current focus is on our policies, procedures and practices relating to tendering, contracting and the purchase of goods and services. Customer Service Council’s e-business strategy will increase online access to our services and identify potential efficiency gains for our customers and staff. Value for Money We are committed to the provision of cost effective services that provide the community with good value for money. This requires active financial management now and into the future. We are reviewing our services to understand and improve how we must deliver them. Infrastructure and Service Planning We own and manage a wide variety of assets on behalf of the community. Assets like roads, parks, stormwater, drainage, libraries and community facilities underpin the success of the city as a place for people to live, work and play. Climate Change The potential impacts of climate change and sea level rise require us to plan for and manage our existing coastal communities, consider the impacts of flooding on new development, and propose mitigation and adaption measures for anticipated risk. Wollongong City Council’s social media channels aims to inform, educate, and inspire our community. For more information visit https://www.wollongong.nsw.gov.au/digital-guidelines

Meet Anna and Billy! They’re the owners of Reub Goldberg Brewing Machine, a local, sustainable brewery in #Tarrawanna. Not only has this power couple harnessed solar energy at their home, but they’re also using it to brew excellent, small batch beer. Why are we talking about beer? Aside from it being delicious, the big message from Council's new Climate Change Mitigation Plan is that everyone, including local businesses, have a role to play in creating a sustainable future for Wollongong. Households contribute around 30 per cent of Wollongong’s electricity and gas consumption, so we're supporting residents to take action at home and in local businesses. Local legends like Anna and Billy are inspirational because they're everyday people who have taken steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and live more sustainably. Not sure where you can start? One of the steps Anna and Billy have taken is installing 80 solar panels on their business roof. As a result, they're saving $1000 a month on their energy bill. They’ve also reduced their business waste by using reusable packaging and turning brewer’s waste into compost and livestock food. They’re doing their bit, their way. Every bit counts! Find out how you (or your business) can start reducing your emissions by visiting our website: https://lnkd.in/gjHPbvbG

Last week, we had an absolute blast chatting to over 200 Wollongong businesses about how they could get involved in the over $755M of Council projects. Wollongong City Council General Manager, Greg Doyle, Chris O’Connor, Nikki Romanczukiewicz and Lance Hazell talked about the significant opportunities for local businesses who want to work with Council. This was a behind-the-scenes look at our tender and formal quotation process, as well as Council’s local content weighting policy that prioritises local suppliers when we make purchasing decisions. As a business, where we choose to spend money matters. An additional $100M spent in the Wollongong construction sector alone can support over 750 local jobs a year. Thank you to everyone who attended the event in person and online. We hope you got something out of it and that you will consider working with us in the future. Thank you as well to John Pennock, Business Development Manager from Southern Region for joining the event and raising awareness of NSW opportunities in the Local Government sector. If you missed this event, we recorded it for you. See our website for more: https://lnkd.in/g-Yu7-Yc #wollongong #business #wollongongbusiness

We’re excited to announce that Wollongong City Council has won two awards at the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW 2024 Tidy Towns Awards! We were awarded for two projects focussed on reducing and recycling waste. 🗑️ Wollongong FOGO Heroes communications & engagement campaign which celebrated everyday Wollongong residents using FOGO (Food Organic Garden Organics – green bin). They addressed some of the perceived barriers and encouraged more people to use FOGO, more often. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gHcdaz3f 🚯 Summer Cleansing litter prevention program which targeted high visitor locations like our beaches, parks and foreshore areas with extra maintenance, recycling cages and recycling bins, and extra rubbish pickups. Congratulations to our teams who worked on these two projects and have helped the City of Wollongong manage waste. #wollongong #sustainability #award

What do you want the City of Wollongong to look like in 10 years’ time? We’re updating our Community Strategic Plan (CSP) and we want as many people as possible to help us design it. Our CSP outlines our community’s goals and priorities for the next 10 years. Everything we do at Council—from patrolling our beaches, cleaning and maintaining pools, building new footpaths and shared paths, repairing roads, hosting community events, buying books for library shelves and caring for our parks and gardens—is guided by the goals set out in this strategy. So, it’s important that we get it right. Please share your thoughts by filling out our short online survey, completing a printed survey at your local library, attending a pop-up event, hosting your own Community Circle or calling us on 4227 7111. You have until 10am, Monday 18 November to share your thoughts. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/gS_ksm_q

It’s not too late to have your say on the future of tourism accommodation in Wollongong. The Draft Tourism Accommodation Review Strategy is on public exhibition until Monday 4 November. Our city is located in a beautiful part of the world. From our escarpment to our beaches, lake and foreshore areas, to our vibrant restaurants and bars, Wollongong has much to offer as a tourist destination. In this draft strategy, Council is proposing a range of potential measures to incentivise tourism accommodation development, including the potential establishment of two new five-star or equivalent hotels in the city centre within the next 10 years. This also includes proposals like adjusting land use planning protocols to permit and encourage development of a broad range of accommodation options to allow more people to come and experience everything Wollongong has to offer. We want to hear as much feedback as possible on ways Council can continue to drive investment in tourism and accommodation. Take a look at the draft strategy and let us know your thoughts. The secret to a fantastic community engagement? Go where the people are! Last Saturday, our Engagement Team set up shop at the Culture Mix festival. With over 15,000 people attending this was a fantastic opportunity for us to spread the word about our draft Community Strategic Plan (or in Council-speak “CSP”). For those who don’t know, the CSP outlines our community’s goals and priorities for the next 10 years. It’s created with the community, for the community. That’s why it’s important we hear from as many people as possible. The pop-up at Culture Mix was a major success, smashing an all-time record of people engaged at one of our pop-ups, but we still want to hear from more voices! Next up we’ll be at the Helensburgh Lions Club Fair at Charles Harper Park on Saturday 26 October, from 9am-3pm so come say hi. You can also get involved via our short online survey or grab a printed copy from your nearest library. Be sure to share your thoughts by 10am on Monday 18 November 2024. Wollongong City Council was in very impressive company last week as one of Parks and Leisure Australia’s National Finalists for a play space greater than $500,000. While Stuart Park’s All Ages All Abilities playground didn’t add a national award to its trophy shelf (it won best place space greater than $500,00 in NSW earlier this year), we’re super chuffed that this important space for our community has received Australia-wide recognition! This play space was inspired by, and built for, adults with disability and was informed by The Playground Project, a collaboration between the University of Wollongong, The Disability Trust and Council. The project is about providing a space where all users can learn new skills, make friends and build long-term resilience and confidence to tackle the world. Plus, we also think it would have been pretty cheeky to win a national Parks & Leisure Award two years in a row after the Cringila Hills Recreation Park took out top honours with the Park of the Year title at the 2023 event.

Don your capes and ready your mask, these Net Zero Heroes are making climate action their business! The big message from our new Climate Change Mitigation Plan is that everyone has a role to play in creating a sustainable future for #Wollongong. As inspiration, we’re celebrating the everyday people—like our friends Georgia, Mary, April, Anna and Billie— who are taking small steps to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and live more sustainably. No two caped crusaders are the same. Each is taking different steps to help the environment, save money and improve their health. They’re doing their bit, their way and every little bit counts.
