It’s Halloween at Greenfleet! What do you think this creepy bunch are doing? 🎃 If you guessed Spitfire Sawfly larvae sticking together for protection, then you would be right 🐛 These insects were found in our Wurneet Laang Laang forest on the lands of the Boon Wurrung people in South Gippsland, Victoria. The grubs develop into non-stinging wasps and are a valuable part of the ecosystem, mainly as food for native birds. They mass together, like in this picture, to appear bigger and frighten off predators. Sawflies don’t spit as their name suggests! But when they feel threatened, they can dribble a yellow substance that looks a bit like fire. What creepy insects have you found in your garden for Halloween? #GrowingHope #Halloween #Ecosystems #Habitat

A leading not-for-profit environmental organisation committed to protecting our climate by restoring our forests.
About us
Greenfleet has delivered climate action for over 25 years. We plant native biodiverse forests to remove carbon emissions on behalf of our supporters and help fight the impacts of climate change. Since 1997, we have planted more than 10.8 million native trees across over 550 legally protected, biodiverse forests in Australia and New Zealand. Greenfleet forests address critical deforestation, capture carbon emissions to protect our climate, reduce soil erosion, improve water quality and restore habitat for wildlife, including many endangered species. Greenfleet is registered as a charity in Australia and eligible tax-deductible donations to Greenfleet have Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status. By offsetting your carbon emissions or donating to Greenfleet, you are taking practical climate action. Together, we can grow our forests and grow climate hope.

Coopers Crossing is nestled in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales on Wiradjuri and Ngunnawal Country. Through our reforestation work, this once-cleared land is being restored to native forest. It will remove carbon emissions and provide food sources and habitat for the local wildlife, including the critically endangered Regent Honeyeater. Since 2020, Greenfleet has planted more than 30 locally native species to create vital habitat and food sources for these vibrant birds. Some of these species include the Yellow Box (Eucalyptus melliodora), River Sheoak (Casuarina cunninghamiana) and the Prickly Tea Tree (Leptospermum continetale). These carefully selected species will provide the ideal canopy and understory to foster a rich, biodiverse ecosystem. Greenfleet is legally protecting this forest for the next 100 years, ensuring its ecological benefits endure and offer hope for local wildlife. 🐨 To find out more about Greenfleet's work at Coopers Crossing, visit: https://lnkd.in/gAT6qkMP #GrowingHope #Biodiversity #ClimateAction #RegentHoneyeater

By restoring native forests across Australia, Greenfleet understands that we work alongside the longest standing land managers on earth. We were honoured to have Mark Koolmatrie, a proud Ngarrindjeri elder, welcome us and our supporters to Country at our Bull Creek property in South Australia earlier this year. Visting the site two years in a row, Mark reflected on the difference a year can make when restoring native ecosystems. He shared knowledge of his traditional lands and reflected on the importance of restoring native forests. Greenfleet is restoring this 14-hectare site with locally native plant species, creating a connection with the nearby Cox Scrub Conservation Park. On a recent visit, we planted Desert Banksia (Banksia ornata) and Silver Banksia (Banksia marginata) to provide potential habitat for pygmy possum populations. Mark is also the owner of Kool Tours , where visitors can explore the history and knowledge of Ngarrindjeri Country and discover authentic cultural experiences. Greenfleet understands that the climate action we take goes hand in hand with reconciliation, and we continue to listen to First Nations voices as we work together to restore native ecosystems. Did you know there are two World Migratory Bird Days each year? 🦜 It is celebrated twice yearly to coincide with the cyclic nature of bird migration in different hemispheres. 🌍 Today, we’re spotlighting the Swift Parrot, an incredible yet critically endangered native bird species. Notable for its bright green, red, yellow, and blue plumage, this small, mighty parrot can travel up to 5,000 km between breeding sites and wintering grounds — the longest distance of any parrot species worldwide. These nomadic migrants usually breed in Tasmania, with most of the population settling in Victoria and NSW during winter. Throughout their breeding season, Swift Parrots feed on the nectar of trees, with the Tasmanian Blue Gum (Eucalyptus globulus) and Black Gum (Eucalyptus ovata) as their primary food source. For habitat, they nest in hollows of eucalypt trees such as Stringybark (Eucalyptus obliqua) and Manna Gum (Eucalyptus viminalis). Greenfleet included these native species in this revegetation project🌳 Greenfleet’s legally protected forests are critical in restoring native wildlife habitat, including this species. The pictured revegetation project is located on Boon Wurrung Country in South Gippsland, Victoria. Look at the variety of seedlings planted at our Wooden Hut project this year! 🌱 Wooden Hut is one of Greenfleet’s most recent projects, found on Waka Waka & Barunggam Country, 2 hours north of Toowoomba, Qld. Greenfleet is revegetating close to 80 hectares of land previously cleared for plantation planting and agriculture. This year we start returning Wooden Hut to native forest, including eucalypt and dry rainforest species. Thanks to our friends at Bunya Nursery, Gympie & District Landcare Group and Eastern Forest Nursery for growing these healthy seedlings. Planted in the highly productive local red soil, we look forward to seeing this forest thrive. As it establishes, this forest will provide potential habitat for known local species including endangered koalas and Greater Gliders, and the threatened grey-headed flying fox. Greenfleet forests are protected for up to 100 years. 🌳 The on-title agreement stays in place even if the land sells and means our forests cannot be cut down for any reason. In many ways, native forests become more productive as they grow. They hold more carbon in their soils from leaf litter and fallen branches, and larger, mature leaves can photosynthesise more. Older forests also create more homes for native animals. Established trees create hollows that provide safe havens for wildlife, high up in taller trees away from predators. Tree hollows can only develop in very mature trees, making our protection key to their development. By keeping our forests safe from deforestation, Greenfleet guarantees they are safe to grow for a lifetime. This amazing transformation is of Aroona, a revegetation project located on Yuggera Country in Mount Mort, South-East Queensland. Since 2019, Greenfleet has been restoring this unique project. Aroona is also a working cattle station, demonstrating that ecosystem restoration and climate action can go hand in hand with sustainable agricultural practices. The after photo was taken on a recent site visit by our Queensland Revegetation Project Manager, Thomas Bell. Our reforestation work involves progressively restoring parts of cleared land and helping to reconnect pockets of existing habitat for native wildlife. Many threatened species, including the Glossy Black Cockatoos, Brush-tailed Phascogales and several glider species, can be found in this region. The forest at Aroona will also build koala habitat, which is even more critical now that they are classified as Endangered in Queensland. In 2022, a koala was spotted in the revegetation area, demonstrating the benefit this project provides to the local populations.🐨 To find out more about our work at Aroona, visit: https://lnkd.in/gcKUn8m7 #GrowingHope #ClimateAction #NativeForests #WildlifeHabitat #Cockatoos #Koalas
