About us

At Guide Dogs Victoria, we provide vital support for Victorians with low vision or blindness. We have done since 1957. Today, we lead as a trusted community organisation with services beyond our beloved Guide Dogs themselves. While the Dogs are a huge part of our organisation, we also offer a wide range of community initiatives, and specialised training and education programs. Each one is designed to make people with low vision more independent, at any stage of life. We work to ensure people with low vision or blindness are active and involved members of the community. We do this by teaching outstanding practical skills to enhance safety, independence, confidence and quality of life: every program is individually tailored for adults and children regardless of when or how they experience a change in vision. From maintaining a family home, to attending work, school or university, we equip people to explore and achieve their potential through whatever training is necessary. Our prompt and professional services are available for people of every age and life stage, across metropolitan and regional Victoria. We partner with people in and around their home and work environments, including schools. The Guide Dogs Victoria team is comprised of highly qualified mobility specialists. We also refer to consulting specialists in Psychology, Counselling, Neuropsychology, Physiotherapy, Endocrinology, Optometry and Audiology. A heartwarming moment in GDV history, connecting the past and the future. Our CEO Nicky Long met with some of GDV's longest standing employees of over 60 years of service, including Lyn Pandji, Diana Hatchley, John Gosling AM, Barbara Bedford and Val Riseborough. From a volunteer Puppy Nurturer to our full-time Nursery Team Leader, Lyn Pandji has a lifelong personal connection to Guide Dogs and has been working with GDV for the last 15 years. Her father, Eric Hatchley was a founding leader in the Guide Dogs movement, leading to the establishment of GDV. Lyn’s mother, Diana Hatchley worked in various roles within GDV including Puppy Raising, Breeding and in our kennels. Notably, Diana named and recorded all the details of every puppy for 50 years. For over 50 years, John Gosling AM has played a pivotal role in the establishment and accreditation of Guide Dog schools worldwide, even serving on the board of the International Guide Dog Federation. During this time, Val Riseborough worked alongside John for 10 years at GDV. Volunteering as a Puppy Raiser and then working in the Nursery, Barbara Bedford pioneered many programs at GDV, and to this day comes in every week to volunteer. From their passion and dedication comes our strong origins and well-built foundation. Their legacy promises to impact new generations while shaping GDV's future successes. #GuideDogsVictoria [Image Description: From L to R standing: Lyn Panji, John Gosling, Nicky Long and Barbara Bedford. We had the pleasure of meeting an incredible young girl named Ruby yesterday. Ruby held a bake sale outside her house, and through her hard work and dedication, raised $150 for GDV! Ruby is a shining example of how small actions can make a big difference. Thank you for your support and for reminding us all of the power of community and generosity 🧡 Do you know a superstar kid that would love to raise funds for Guide Dogs Victoria? Guide Dogs is encouraging kids aged five to 18 to get involved in our 'Take the Puppy Pledge' campaign. We had a wonderful time visiting our friends at AGL for a Pat & Chat! It was a fantastic opportunity to share the impactful work we do to support the low vision and blind community, and of course, a great way for everyone to enjoy some puppy cuddles. Last Thursday, we acknowledged a milestone in the transformational redevelopment of our iconic site in Kew with an official Flag Raising Ceremony. Joining us for this momentous occasion were special guests Dr Monique Ryan MP, who serves as the Independent Member for Kooyong and Cr Nick Stavrou, representing Studley Ward as Councillor. Their insights underscored the importance of community involvement and collaboration in our efforts to enhance the facilities and services for Victorians at our iconic Kew location. Throughout the event, we were moved by heartwarming speeches from various Guide Dogs staff including Guide Dogs Victoria Chair Dr David A Cochrane, CEO Nicky Long, Campus Redevelopment Project Manager Catherine Curry-Hyde, sharing the journey that has brought us to this day. It was of high interest to hear some of the history recalled by our Dog Breeding Manager of 37 years, David Markham. To end the ceremony, we invited Guide Dog Clients Zoe, Zander and Kelly to raise the Torres Strait Islander, Aboriginal and Australian flags, marking a significant moment of unity and celebration. We extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to everyone who attended, and especially to 2Construct Pty Ltd and FPPV Architecture for all of their work over the last 5+ years to deliver this project. We cannot wait to see the rest of our Kew site come to life with tours being conducted and our official opening in September. #GuideDogsVictoria

During the school holidays, we kept our young Clients booked and busy with lots of engaging activities – including a Mobility Olympics Camp supported by Perpetual Limited’s 2023 Impact Philanthropy, a makeup program supporting Clients to express themselves through makeup, and a ‘Cane or Canine’ session. The three-day Mobility Olympics Camp took place at City CYC, a school camp facility located in the heart of Melbourne CBD. Aiming to foster positive experiences in sport while developing skills in a fun and social environment, participants tried and explored various sports. We were privileged to have the Captain of the St Kilda Football Club Blind team and ambassadors from Blind Sports and Recreation Victoria (BSRV) facilitating activities like tennis and basketball with support from the Guide Dogs Orientation and Mobility Team and Occupational Therapy staff. Our two-day "Don't Make It Up" program was hosted by our Occupational Therapy team, where participants with low vision or blindness learned about different beauty products, skincare and skin preparation, makeup application and removal – with the products generously donated by our long-standing national partner, Coles Group Lastly, in the final week of the school holidays, our Guide Dog Mobility Team hosted a special session of 'Cane or Canine' where secondary school-aged Clients learned about the differences between navigating their world with a Guide Dog versus a long cane. They also had the unique and exclusive opportunity to experience working alongside a Guide Dog. Thank you to our Clients for joining us and to everyone who made these enriching and empowering experiences possible! Whether you missed out or want to join our next school holiday adventures – mark 23 September to 25 September on your calendars for our Senior Student Client Camp held at our new sensory-rich, fully accessible Campus. #GuideDogsAustralia #GuideDogsVictoria

Yesterday, we were treated to a Native Ingredients presentation from the wonderful Nornie Bero, founder and CEO of Mabu Mabu. GDV staff had the opportunity to engage in a sensory experience to smell, taste and touch an array of native ingredients like Myrtle, Pepper Berry and Bush Tomato. In addition to our NAIDOC Week Celebrations, we hosted an internal competition to win Nornie Bero’s cookbook, Mabu Mabu by submitting a photo walking on Country. Congratulations, David Markham for your wonderful photo taken on Taungurung Country and enjoy your next read! Thank you Nornie for sharing your story with us and hosting an incredible presentation 🧡 #NAIDOCWeek2024 #BlakLoudProud #GuideDogsVictoria [Image Description One: Nornie Bero and Guide Dogs Victoria Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Specialist, Stacey holding two yellow Labrador puppies at our Puppy Nursery, both smiling at the camera.] [Image Description Two: A variety of native ingredients placed across a table with a black Guide Dogs branded cloth.]
