American health agency Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a listeria outbreak, first reported in July 2024, that is now the United States’ largest outbreak since 2011. The outbreak has claimed at least nine lives, while another 57 have hospitalised, across 18 states. “The CDC warned that listeria is a bacteria that can survive on surfaces like meat slicers and in foods, even at refrigerated temperatures. Symptoms can take up to 10 weeks to appear after consuming contaminated food, which makes this outbreak particularly challenging to contain.” Violations discovered in the recall and investigation, including mould and mildew buildup at sinks and coolers, leaking water, and insects flying around meat products, all highlight the need for rigorous cleaning protocols and certified non-food products in food and beverage facilities. More recently there has been a growing demand for high quality disposable gloves in the food sector and Mun Australia’s versatile gloves, renowned for their durability and versatility, are a suitable solution for the food industry demands. 🔷  With the increase in requirements for demonstrating compliance to a given standard, audit costs are steadily rising across the industry. The ultimate cost of a food safety audit is based on the amount of time an auditor spends on site plus a travel component, also based on time. Typically, that total time is multiplied by a rate to yield the total cost, therefore the trick to reducing auditing costs, is to reduce the time of the audit. HACCP International’s Technical Director, Martin Stone, wrote an interesting and practical article addressing this, titled "Reduce Your Audit Costs". 🔶 HACCP International’s Certification Manager, Rachel Meryment, wrote a fantastic article “Introduction to the HACCP Food Safety System and the impact on selecting equipment and consumables” which explains the difference between HACCP and HACCP International certification. Pesticon 2024 took place last week, August 14-16, at The Star, Gold Coast, QLD, Australia. Juliana Elliott, our Technical Manager, attended and found the conference to be a wonderful opportunity to network within the pest industry.
