We recently joined forces with Combine Air for an exciting fundraising event at the Cat & Fiddle Hotel in Balmain. This is the second time we have collaborated with Combine Air to raise much-needed funds for the Harding Miller Education Foundation. The night was made even more special with the presence of our alumna, Sabah from the Class of 2022, who shared her inspiring experience and the impact that our scholarship has had on her academic journey. Thanks to the generosity of all involved, we raised $5,350, which will go towards supporting high-potential girls with the resources and opportunities they need to succeed. Thank you to the amazing team at Combine Air for organising this memorable event and to everyone who attended, those who generously donated prizes, and everyone who made it a success! Advancing the cause of education in Australia.
About us
The Foundation’s mission is to bridge the long-term societal gap of opportunity for girls within the public-school system who are experiencing financial disadvantage. Across Australia, public schools have a disproportionate share of the poorest families but also of children who are most educationally disadvantaged. Women within Australia are two and a half times more likely to live in poverty in their old age than men. The UN Girls Education Initiative has stated that “Girl’s education is critical in terms of what it can achieve in raising families out of poverty and accelerating economic development for the community. It has a multiplier effect like no other.” The Harding Miller Education Foundation Scholarship Program provides the tools and support to lift the educational achievements and career aspirations of high potential girls who are facing disadvantage. The HMEF offers the most generous scholarship to public high school students in Australia, but we don’t write cheques and hope for the best. We work with the girls and their families over four years with a multi-layered support system ensuring they make the most of the scholarship. We provide a personal infrastructure enabling them to navigate their own pathway towards tertiary education, a fulfilling career and a purposeful future. Each scholarship is valued at $20,000 over four years and provides critical resources and support to enable our scholars to excel and reach their potential. We support the public-school system and the communities they are in by supporting high potential girls to excel while they stay at their public school, stay with their families and stay in their communities. We support girls in public education because we know that this investment returns more to their families, our community and Australian society.

Diana Mousina bringing the fun into economics! Hopefully this trend reverses as more girls and women recognise the benefits of studying economics at school and/or university and the broad range of rewarding careers this can lead to. #houstonkemp
The share of girls enrolled in high school economics has fallen by 10 percentage points over the past 30 years. Why should I care about this? Isn’t it a free market so people can do what they like? Maybe to some extent, but long-term trends are worth watching. Lower female enrolments in economics may be a signal of something – perhaps there is not enough exposure of economics and mathematics to girls from a young age? Perhaps females don’t know what being an economist is and it seems like a “boys club?”. Women in Australia have lower levels of financial literacy than men, and by a larger amount compared to our global peers. Studying economics is a great basis for concepts that help improve financial literacy. This video showcases why more girls should study economics!

In recognition of the International Day of Rural Women, we would like to share the journey of Khawlah, a 2023 Harding Miller alumna who continues to inspire 👩🎓 Khawlah is currently pursuing a double degree at the University of Sydney; a Bachelor of Science majoring in Health and a Bachelor of Advanced Studies majoring in International Relations. She chose these two fields because they will allow her to explore how health impacts communities on both a local and global scale, a topic she has always been passionate about. Coming from a small rural town, Khawlah has seen firsthand the challenges communities face in accessing healthcare and education. This led her to deeply appreciate the value of education, quickly realising that with limited opportunities in small towns, education is one of the keys to expanding her horizons. Khawlah expressed that one of the biggest challenges of living in a rural town was the distance from larger educational institutions. However, instead of seeing that as a limitation, she sought out opportunities online and through community organisations. She also made sure to apply for scholarships and work during her holidays to overcome the financial barriers. When asked about the role rural women play in advancing their communities, Khawlah stated that they are often involved in everything from healthcare to education and community-building efforts. In the long run, she wants to help create opportunities for young people, especially young women, to pursue their own paths to education and empowerment. Read Khawlah's full story on our website! Link below 🔗 Currently, 30% of Harding Miller scholars come from rural areas, and we are committed to supporting these young women in every way possible. We strive to provide rural young women with the tools and guidance they need to realise their full potential, helping them overcome the unique challenges of living in a rural area and empowering them to succeed academically and beyond. #HMEF #InternationalDayofRuralWomen #Scholarships #GirlsEducation

In honour of International Day of the Girl Child, we would like to spotlight Jasmine, an outstanding Class of 2025 scholar from Queensland 👩🎓 Jasmine was recently selected as a participant in the University of Queensland Young ChangeMakers Program, an on-campus experience program aimed at helping Year 11 students become the leaders, thinkers and innovators of the future. Jasmine hopes the program will help her foster new friendships as she believes this is one of the key steps towards building her future. She also wants to develop her leadership and innovative thinking skills, whilst experiencing a taste of university life. Reflecting on the 2024 theme ‘Girls’ vision for the future’, Jasmine also shared her aspirations and hopes for the future. She envisions a future where everyone has equal opportunities without the limitation of societal norms. As someone who recognises the potential of taking every opportunity, she hopes to realise this vision by encouraging others to take a step out of their comfort zone because everyone’s voice has a significant impact. She advises everyone to take on every opportunity that comes their way and utilise it to develop their skills.
