Proposed legislation in South Australia will increase controls and penalties related to the sale and use of tobacco and vaping products. The proposed new laws aim to protect our community, particularly children and vulnerable people from the harms of tobacco and vapes. These laws will: - Increase penalties up to $1.5 million for breaches in sale/use of vapes – being the toughest penalties of any state or territory in Australia. - Ban the sale of tobacco products vending machines. - Ban the sale and supply of vapes, except through pharmacies. - Ban the sale and supply of vapes to any person under 18, including at pharmacies. - Introduce a wholesale tobacco licence, to more easily verify legitimate operators. - Create a new authority to ban novel products which are marketed as an alternative to vapes, including nicotine pouches. - Create a five metre buffer zone around smoke-free areas at covered public transport areas. With the rate of those who had ever tried vaping having doubled amongst secondary school students nationally (from 13.5% in 2017 to 29.9% in 2023), these laws are imperative to reducing the exposure and uptake of smoking and vaping amongst young South Australians and reduce the health costs in the long term. We’ve been interested in the insights and perspectives coming out of the Social Media Summit being held in South Australia today. The latest evidence from the South Australian Population Health Survey (SAPHS) shows 70% of children (17 and under) are racking up more than the recommended two hours a day on screens on weekends, and 42% on weekdays. Screen time during childhood can have long-term impacts on a child’s development. Read more about SA children and screentime habits in the 2023 SAPHS Report https://bit.ly/4eR3tek
