NOVEMBER EVENT: It's been a big year of learning and connecting at Better Building Exchange, and we'd love for you to join us for our final exchange of 2024. 💥 Social value refers to the positive social, environmental, and economic impacts of a project beyond financial gains.   However, there is currently no standardised way to define or measure social value in the built environment in Australia; this lack of clarity makes it hard to assess a project’s impact, maximise positive outcomes and ensure accountability. Date: Wednesday 20 November Time: 6pm — 8pm (Discussion from 6:30pm) Location: Better Building Exchange enabled by HIP V. HYPE, 427 Albert Street Brunswick 3056 VIC Join: Samantha Peart, Global Head of Sustainability, Hassell Ingrid Langtry, Place & Experience Gavin Ashley, Head of Better Cities & Regions and a Director of Sustainability, HIP V. HYPE Alexandra Faure, Associate, HIP V. HYPE Explore practical ways to define, deliver and measure meaningful social value. Whether you’re an architect, planner, developer, builder, economist or engaged citizen; we welcome your attendance and input…! 🌿 Nibbles by Small Axe Deli, Drinks by Oak & Young and Stomping Ground. Last night, Ferrars & York won the country’s top award for multiple residential architecture, receiving the Frederick Romberg Award at the 2024 National Architecture Awards in Adelaide. Tackling the housing crisis demands using what we already have more efficiently and with more consideration. Buildings like Ferrars & York only exist thanks to residents engaged with this same understanding, and we hope that they share in this success with pride. We’re proud to see this project recognised as a testament to more responsible use of our urban environment and hopefully, as impetus for future housing in Australian cities. Ferrars & York is enabled by HIP V. HYPE, designed in collaboration with Six Degrees Architects and built by IRONSIDE. Read more about Ferrars & York from Michael Bleby in today’s The Australian Financial Review, or the Jury's Citation, via the links below. When the settings are right, apartment living provides access to parks, cultural hubs, public transport and more — making it a viable and appealing long term alternative to suburban life. Thank you to The Guardian for profiling this shift in the Australian dream, speaking with HIP V. HYPE Founder Liam Wallis about the benefits of thoughtfully designed apartments for families, and the challenges faced by industry in increasing the supply of 3+ bedroom homes. Even with kids in tow, apartment living can be just as comfortable and rewarding when designed with care and consideration for the people that will actually be living in them long term. Consensus on the issue of meaningfully increasing the density of our cities is critical. Continuing to encroach on our surrounding natural environments and failing to optimise the use of existing infrastructure comes at far too great a cost — economically, socially and environmentally. HIP V. HYPE believes that narrowing the debate creates a focus on meaningful action to address how we best densify our cities; importantly seeking to celebrate what we love about our existing city but equally importantly enabling architects, designers, and entrepreneurs to delight us with the fullness of their creative potential. We call on all levels of government to narrow the debate, supported by evidence-based, open-minded, rigorous, long-term thinking to unlock truly sustainable value for our cities. Thank you to the Victorian Minister for Planning, the Hon. Sonya Kilkenny who, alongside Nina Taylor MP, selected Ferrars & York to announce the statewide Great Design Fast Track plan, set to accelerate quality apartment projects of three to six storeys across Victoria. We’d also like to thank Benson Saulo, the Liberal Party’s candidate for the Federal seat of Macnamara and Senator Andrew Bragg for taking the time to tour Ferrars & York last week.

A throwback to this time last year, Liam Wallis presenting at the Sir Ian Athfield Memorial Lecture in Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland. A lecture that commemorates the late Ian Athfield, one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most influential architects, and a lecture that celebrates an unorthodox approach to business and design. Liam shares the story of how HIP V. HYPE came to be, our rights and responsibilities in light of the climate crisis. Thanks again to the Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZ Institute of Architects for this invitation and the hospitality during our visit. Last year, our Technical Lead (Passivhaus), Marcus Strang, joined a group of leading Australian architects, engineers, developers and building professionals on a tour of landmark timber projects, fabrication and manufacturing facilities across Sweden and Norway. As a recipient of a prestigious Gottstein Trust Grant, awarded in honour of scientist and CSIRO leader Bill Gottstein, Marcus had the opportunity to join the WoodSolutions tour to deepen his knowledge to support innovation in Australia’s renewable forestry sector. Marcus’ report for the Gottstein Trust has just been published, highlighting best-practice European case studies in mass timber construction to inspire confidence and adoption within Australia’s building industry. Sustainable Urbanist | I lead projects at the intersection of Urban Design, Planning & Sustainability

Sandwiched between a railway line and a busy street, it was an unlikely location for the best night’s sleep I’d had in a long time… But good design eats site constraints for breakfast. And Melbourne's HV.HOTEL has good design in spades. A small, short-stay apartment usually isn’t the sort of place to leave a lasting impression; but for HV.HOTEL, leaving an impression is the entire point. Conceived by sustainability consulting and property development practice HIP V. HYPE as a way of enabling more people to experience the benefits of a sustainable apartment, the 'hotel' is nestled on the top floor of Ferrars & York, HIP V. HYPE’s award winning low-impact apartment development. I had the privilege of staying at HV.HOTEL on a recent trip to Melbourne, and I was blown away by this stunning example of sustainability-meets-better living. Here's the key features I can’t stop thinking about: - It's so damn comfortable. An 8.1 star NatHERS rating = walking around in your undies, in winter, without the heater on! ☀️ - The Save Switch. Flick a switch as you leave the unit, and all non-essential electrical points are deactivated, saving an estimated to 5-10% annual energy use (without yelling at the kids to turn the lights off!). ⚡️ - Those gorgeous @Messmate recycled timber floorboards. Just WOW. ♻️ - Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) system. How do you build next to a train line and main road, and still get fresh air all day long, without the noise or pollution? ERV! 💨 - Carbon Neutral in both construction and operation. 🌏 - I didn’t know it was possible to get excited about windows, but the Passivehaus-standard, locally made, double-glazed, timber tilt-and-turn windows by BINQ Windows are actually stunning. 😍 Then there's the rainwater collection for toilet flushing and garden use; heat pump hot water system; ceiling fans; cross flow ventilation; honeycomb blinds and external shading; EV charging; and on-point curation of locally sourced sustainable design goods. Ahhhh... take me back! Thanks to the crew at HIP V. HYPE for generously putting me up and giving me a taste of low impact living at its sweetest! Details: Developer: HIP V.
