How do we bring together the knowledge, tools, governance models, and workforce capability to optimise investments in water catchments? This informative webinar will discuss opportunities for harnessing recent advances in #AI tools to collate diverse data and information sources for catchments. With the aim to reduce the ‘data churn’ and bring all actors to the negotiating table with increased access to technical, scientific, and socio-ecological information. Richard Campbell will be joined by David Hamilton, Director and Professor in the Australian Rivers Institute, Griffith University and Ajmal Mian, Professor of Computer Science at The University of Western Australia known for his research in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision, Machine Learning and Robotics. To join us on Friday 23rd August at 12:30pm, Register here: https://lnkd.in/gF9eiWwC #environmentalmonitoring #webinars #watercatchments #technicaltalks

The Sydney Institute of Marine Science is a non-profit organization that was formed through a partnership between Macquarie University, the University of NSW, the University of Sydney and the University of Technology, Sydney. SIMS have over 100 scientists and graduate students and represents a broad diversity of skills in marine science. Two current projects underway at the institute are Project Restore and the Sydney Seahorse Project Project Restore aims to apply four of our unique restoration techniques simultaneously in target areas of Sydney Harbour to see if their synergistic effect increases positive outcomes for these ecosystems. It will be amongst the first, globally, to move beyond habitat-by-habitat restoration, to provide an example of how multi-habitat restoration can be conducted at seascape scale to not only maximize ecological but also socio-economic benefits. The Sydney Seahorse Project aims to repopulate the endangered White’s seahorse through a research-based captive breeding program while simultaneously addressing the key issue of habitat loss through the provision of artificial habitats called “Seahorse Hotels”, and the collaborative restoration of habitats including the Endangered seagrass, Posidonia australis. The Sydney Seahorse Project has a strong focus on using rigorous scientific practice to develop ideal conservation methodologies. Repopulation of this iconic species serves not only to restore natural habitat and ecological function but to stimulate community interest and stewardship initiatives. Please join us on Friday, 9th August @12:30pm for this exciting presentation! The recent mammoth rise of artificial intelligence (AI) as a data analysis tool has revolutionized the way we are able to interpret vast amounts of information. AI algorithms can swiftly analyze complex datasets, identify patterns, and make accurate predictions, thereby enhancing decision-making processes. This technological advancement has led to significant improvements in many professional fields. As AI continues to evolve, its integration into data analysis is poised to drive innovation and efficiency across various industries, shaping the future of data-driven decision-making. In this presentation, Matthew O'Brien will showcase some of the practical AI use cases he has developed for environmental data using ChatGPT, drawing from his own experience and insights from his peers. These examples aim to illustrate the potential of AI as a valuable part of your data exploration and automation toolkit, possibly saving time and sanity from performing similar processes in Excel! Please join us on Friday, 26 July @12:30pm for this exciting presentation! #environmentalmonitoring #artificialintelligence #dataanalysis

On Friday, we are joined by Murray Einarson from Haley & Aldrich for another HydroTerra webinar. Early conceptualizations of dissolved contaminant plumes assumed that hydrodynamic dispersion would cause the plumes to spread laterally and vertically along the flow path. The practice of monitoring groundwater contamination using spatially-distributed, long-screened monitoring wells has perpetuated that belief. Groundwater field research has shown that hydrodynamic dispersion is much less extensive than originally thought. That knowledge has resulted in a more efficient method of characterizing and monitoring dissolved plumes using transects of multi-depth samples. The transect approach to plume characterization and monitoring is less expensive and more accurate than the traditional approach using conventional monitoring wells. Moreover, the transect approach facilitates calculation of contaminant mass discharge (aka mass loading or integrated mass flux) that is recognized as a superior predictor of potential impacts to water supply wells and surface water bodies. The popularity of using contaminant mass discharge at contaminated sites is growing around the globe, including in Australia. Solinst Canada is a leading manufacturer of technologies that support the characterization and remediation of dissolved contaminant plumes using the transect approach. It is our pleasure to host Emeritus Professor Jack Ng from the Queensland Alliance for Environmental Health Sciences, the University of Queensland. Jack was the lead author of the NEPM guidance for industry on “Contaminant Bioavailability and Bioaccessibility”, and a contributor to several WHO, JECFA, and IARC monographs including the upcoming IARC monograph for the evaluation of PFOS and PFOA. Jack will be speaking to us about the challenges of the complexity of exposure measurement in toxicity and risk assessment related to the internal dose, and the uncertainty dealing with exposure of multiple contaminants. Jack will provide examples for validating new tools developed for assessing multiple contaminants. The IARC carcinogen evaluation framework will also be discussed using PFOS and PFOA as an example. What will the key learnings be? · The importance of internal dose assessment. · How bioavailability and bio accessibility provide a more refined risk assessment. · Developing a new tool for safe cattle grazing on rehabilitated mine sites. · Developing a new tool for assessing cyanide complexes in tailing dams. · New IARC classification of PFOS and PFOA coming by the end of 2024. Please join us tomorrow for this webinar. Register via the link below. Can't attend? Not to worry! We post all of our webinars to our YouTube channel & website afterwards. https://lnkd.in/g3yfUmfv #environmentalmonitoring #webinar #contaminants

“There are known knowns…. There are known unknowns.…… But there are also unknown unknowns.” from Donald Rumsfeld (of course!) Since we first started remediation and management of contamination on sites in the late 1980s, uncertainties in the assessment, remediation and development phases of such projects have led to significant time, cost and outcome issues for stakeholders. Ian Kluckow of Prensa Pty Ltd has been remediating sites through much of that time period having been in the industry for over 35 years. Ian will start his presentation by illustrating some of the fundamental aspects of contaminated land management that drive the uncertainty. Through real career examples, he will delve into some of the history of how he has come to a greater appreciation of contaminated land risks to potentially save you some of the learning that he has already done. Ian will also talk about some of the more significant and unusual challenges he has faced on the journey of discovery that contaminated land management presents. Please join us next Friday, 14 June for this webinar. Register via the link below. https://lnkd.in/gx_TYHuW #environmentalmonitoring #webinar
