IABC Victoria reposted this
Corporate Affairs/Crisis, Issues, Communications Strategy/Governance at Holmesglen/Pride Centre Board Member/IABC Vic Immediate Past President
The true test of a great speech is whether it still has you thinking days later. And on that test I'm delighted that Joe Calafiore agreed to deliver the Third Annual Deb Ganderton Oration at IABC Victoria last week. Cause he delivered. Taking us on a journey through his career from marketing at Melb Uni (positioning is everything) to the time we shared in Rob Hulls' Office (at a time pre social media, when print, radio and TV ruled) he spoke passionately about the power of communications. About his style of leadership and how it has been informed by his work in corporate affairs. What's stayed with me is how his humble approach keeps delivering real results. Listening to families affected by road trauma, tasking finance and IT executives with values conversations. With making every conversation matter, as part of a culture change initiative. And smartly, ensuring that initiatives weren't badged Communications, Marketing or People and Culture instead making them corporate priorities owned by all executives. Support functions/ consultants do ourselves no favours when vanity and ego lead us to try and do a lap of honour around the organisation or this site waving the initiative we might have spent ages of blood, sweat and tears on. Winning the actual battle...fewer road deaths, more happy and mentally well employees...those are the challenges Joe and his team are focused on engaging with and communicating. Not whether a Comms strategy got approved or that the team got thanks for it. Doing good in the world is his north star. And we can't hear enough from people like him. Good deeds shouldn't be the icing, it should be the whole damn cake. As opposed to the pap that often gets passed for influential content, Joe inspired me through practical examples to recommit to creating a better world. To be curious and open to new approaches. He inspired all in the room to use our gifts to help him and his team create safer workplaces...that's a challenge worthy of corporate affairs professionals! Deb Ganderton would have loved it. And thankfully for those who missed it Joe has allowed us to share his words so please follow IABC Victoria as it'll get posted soon. And well done to Matthew Magain for the great visual sketch of the speech!
