🌟 Celebrating 40 Years of ICN Victoria! 🌟 Last Tuesday, we gathered at the State Library Victoria’s Conversation Quarter to mark ICN Victoria’s 40th Anniversary. Over 300 attendees joined us, including distinguished VIPs from government, industry leaders, and local SMEs. Together, we celebrated four decades of connecting Victorian businesses to opportunities and strengthening local capability. We were honoured to hear from esteemed speakers, including Bronwyn Halfpenny MP, The Hon. Wade Noonan, and ICN Victoria’s Chair of the Board, Tim Piper AM. Their reflections celebrated ICN Victoria's successes over the years and looked ahead to a future focused on empowering Victorian capability and industry partnerships. A special highlight was recognising Russell Rolls, our senior board member, for his exceptional 20+ years of service. His commitment and leadership have been invaluable to ICN Victoria’s journey. As we celebrate 40 years of ICN Victoria, we reflect on projects that showcase our commitment to empowering local businesses. One example is the Vision 2020 redevelopment of State Library Victoria, completed in December 2019. This project not only rejuvenated Australia’s oldest public library but also underscored the impact of local partnerships in balancing heritage restoration with modern innovation. ICN Victoria played a role, connecting the redevelopment with skilled Victorian suppliers—highlighting the economic impact of keeping work local. Here are just a few contributions from Victorian businesses involved in this transformative project: ·        Timber Restoration: Bendigo’s Martin Coman restored heritage woodwork, preserving the library’s historical charm. ·         Leather Upholstery: Graeme Davison from Woodshed Antiques in Ballarat breathed new life into aged leather seating. ·         Mechanical Ductwork: Allstaff Airconditioning Pty Ltd fabricated modern duct systems locally. ·         Steel Fabrication: Campbellfield-based Apex Welding & Steel Fabrication provided structural steelwork with precision and care. ·        Glazing: Integrity Glazing, using glass from Viridian Glass Australia in Dandenong, filled the space with light while maintaining historical integrity. ·        Metalwork: Balustrading Specialists crafted functional yet beautiful metal elements. ·        Acoustic Panels: Heidelberg and Bayswater’s Autex Acoustics Australia supplied acoustic panels for vibrant, engaging learning spaces. As we celebrate 40 years of ICN connecting businesses with major projects, we reflect on one of our recent success stories— the Bendigo Law Courts, which opened in 2023. This state-of-the-art facility was designed with the community in mind, bringing specialist courts and key service agencies together under one roof for the first time in the region. With advanced technology, multipurpose spaces, and strong sustainability features, it represents a new era of operational excellence in regional infrastructure. At ICN Victoria, we’re proud to have played a role in ensuring local suppliers were at the forefront of this transformative project. Thanks to the dedication of Noel Morton, former ICN Victoria Industry Adviser, Jacaranda Industries of Geelong was awarded the major joinery, ceiling, and wall panelling contract. Their incredible craftsmanship can be seen throughout the building with beautiful finishes, including acoustic wall panels, blackbutt veneer, and feature ceilings—all manufactured and installed locally. Reflecting our commitment to the Local Jobs First Policy, this project created real opportunities for our community. Jacaranda delivered 8,661 hours for apprentices, 1,806 hours for people with disabilities, 1,666 hours for Indigenous/Torres Strait Islanders, and 3,439 hours for female participation. Additionally, Noel facilitated the introduction of Bendigo Pottery, whose custom ceramic wall tiles are proudly featured in the award-winning double-height public foyer. As we celebrate ICN's 40th anniversary, projects like the Bendigo Law Courts remind us of our mission—to champion local businesses, create jobs, and build stronger communities. Victoria’s clean energy sector is poised for unprecedented growth, with significant opportunities for local businesses in renewable energy projects. In its four decades of existence, ICN Victoria has been a key player in supporting the development of renewable energy. One notable success story is the Macarthur Wind Farm Pty Ltd project in Western Victoria, where ICN Victoria, led by Peter McCracken, facilitated the supply of 90 kilometers of underground medium voltage cable for the 140 wind turbines. This project, completed in early 2013, stands as one of Australia’s largest renewable energy plants, showcasing the impact of local collaboration and maximising local content. ICN Victoria's introduction of OLEX CABLES AUSTRALIA PTY LTD, a Melbourne-based company with advanced capabilities, helped facilitate selection over international competitors for the project. This step not only supported local businesses but also emphasised the importance of sustainability and reducing the environmental footprint in energy projects. Olex Cables acknowledged ICN Victoria's crucial role in introducing them to the market sector of the Macarthur Wind Farm project, highlighting the value of local partnerships in driving renewable energy initiatives. With a history spanning 40 years, we’re proud to have played a role in supporting the Victorian Government’s Local Jobs First policy. Our contribution to the 2007 Southern Cross Station redevelopment project stands as an example our commitment to connecting local businesses and fostering job creation in the community. Our collaboration with local suppliers contributed to this modern transit hub built on a strong local foundation. With 24 exhibitors at the event , showcasing the latest in local innovations in the local MedTech sector there is a lot to celebrate with advanced manufacturing in Victoria.
