Connecting suburbs. Creating jobs.

About us

Changing the way people move around Melbourne and improving the liveability of key growth areas. Suburban Rail Loop is a city and state-shaping project that will change how we move around Melbourne, creating new possibilities in the neighbourhoods associated with new stations. Once the 90 kilometre rail loop is completed, Suburban Rail Loop will connect every major rail line through our middle suburbs, from the Frankston line to the Werribee line. Suburban Rail Loop Authority (SRLA) is responsible for the planning and delivery of the largest infrastructure project in Victoria’s history. Our social media channels have been created to provide relevant and timely information, share project news and updates, and offer a platform for the community to get involved. We encourage the community to engage and interact with us via our social media channels. Updates

  • New ABS data shows the City of Monash is in the top 3 places migrants choose to call home when they arrive in Australia. It’s no surprise people are flocking to these vibrant suburbs – Monash is home to Australia’s largest university and the biggest employment hub outside the CBD, Clayton is home to world-class hospitals and research facilities, and Glen Waverley is a thriving area for retail and entertainment. SRL will help manage this growth with more homes where we need them – on the doorstep of fast and convenient public transport. We’re building new underground stations at Clayton, Monash and Glen Waverley as part of SRL East – and construction is ramping up.

  • We’re creating new open space for Clayton. 2700 square metres of open space over 2 sites will replace the community space under the elevated rail line that is needed to build the new underground SRL station. They’ll be open before major construction starts and will provide 20% more open space and 46 new trees. Local feedback has helped shape the design the spaces – which will have play areas, exercise equipment, picnic tables and seating. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eucSs9Fx

  • A world first! An all-women tunnel boring machine (TBM) crew will help build the SRL tunnels – and we’re recruiting now to train this ground-breaking team to launch in 2027. Led by Isolde Piet - the first female TBM pilot in the world - the crew will be one of eight carving out the SRL East twin tunnels between Cheltenham and Glen Waverley. Initiatives like this are creating new careers for women in construction, with the TBM crew requiring up to 25 highly skilled roles including the TBM operator, gantry and segment crane operators, and grouters. Expressions of interest are now open for this exciting opportunity: https://lnkd.in/gKrZ7sqK

  • The other main event in Paris? Line 14 of the Grand Paris Express is open! Completed in time for the Olympics, the first stage of the French capital’s extended metro line is helping move visitors and locals to sporting events and destinations around the city, with up to 700,000 passengers a day during the Games. The Grand Paris Express is being delivered in stages - adding new orbital rail lines to support how people travel around the city, reduce travel times, and deliver new housing precincts well connected by transport connections – just like SRL in Melbourne. SRL will help Melbourne keep up with the world’s great cities, delivering a turn-up-and-go line that gets people where they want to go and supports greater housing options, jobs and services in the middle suburbs. 📸 Image: Metro Report International

  • We’ve started our big dig in Burwood – carving out a 19m deep, 38m long and 29m wide space – where we’ll launch tunnel boring machines. The underground SRL station at Burwood will be adjacent to Deakin Uni – delivering a direct train service for the first time to the thousands of students and staff who travel to the campus every day. Dig a little deeper, swipe through. https://lnkd.in/dZttkAqn

  • SRL is broadening career horizons for young regional Victorians. Our team loved chatting to Gippsland students about the exciting opportunities to work on Victoria’s biggest infrastructure project – including through our Graduate Program. When SRL East is open in 2035, the transport super hub at Clayton will offer future Gippsland students direct connections to Monash and Deakin universities, Box Hill Institute, and jobs across Melbourne’s suburbs. Construction is underway! Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gQYw5pJd

  • The new SRL station at Clayton will become a major interchange when it opens by 2035 – including for regional V/Line passengers. The transport super hub will connect the Cranbourne/Pakenham and Gippsland lines – so passengers won’t need to travel through the CBD to get to jobs, hospitals and universities located in the suburbs.

  • The Committee for Melbourne has released its ‘Living in Melbourne 2024’ research results. It found that many people wanted more affordable housing, public transport and greater connectivity. All things that will be delivered by Suburban Rail Loop. The Committee also found that people living in outer suburbs ‘are commuting longer than those that live in inner suburbs’ and that 72% use cars to travel to and from work or study rather than public transport. The Committee goes on to say: “Despite the emphasis on car ownership in people’s daily lives, there is an underlying support for public transport, with 64% of Melburnians rating it as a crucial factor in choosing where to live. “Our city’s growth model of urban sprawl is having an impact on liveability such as connectivity and access to transport and amenities. Affordable housing and public transport connectivity were identified as critical areas needing improvement.” This is why we are getting on with building SRL. More public transport, more homes, where people want to live.
