Delivering the Inspiring Australia program to WA.

About us

Connecting science with community. The Inspiring WA program supports initiatives and events which engage diverse groups who are historically under-represented in STEM. We are particularly interested in initiatives which can promote under-represented groups contributions to STEM and which break down stereotypes of what a STEM professional looks like and who can engage with the sciences. Inspiring WA coordinates National Science Week for WA, administers targeted statewide grant funding, and supports the STEM engagement network. The program aims to strengthen the network through stronger relationships, resources and knowledge sharing. The Inspiring WA program is part of the Inspiring Australia National Network. We are supported by the Commonwealth Government Department of Industry, Science and Resources through an Inspiring Australia Network grant and by the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation. The program is proudly hosted by Scitech Discovery Centre in Perth, on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk Noongar people.

  • Wonderful to see photos from the Women ROCK! National Science Week event. Despite the weather, over 200 community members joined to explore fossils, geology, and the incredible work of women scientists.

Check out some photos from the Women ROCK! Science Week Family Fun Day!👩🔬 Despite the rainy weather, on the 24th August, over 200 people joined us at the Victoria Park Community Centre Inc. to explore all things dinosaurs, geology, and the incredible discoveries of women scientists. 🦖 From making your own marble fossil to piecing together a sauropod skull from Winton, Queensland and guessing fossilized coral from WA's Canning Basin, we were glad to get so many people engaged with the many areas of Earth science our group covers! 🌏 Our brilliant PhD students Luke Brosnan, Hridya Vijay, and outreach officer Lisa Smith even showcased real fossils and samples from the Chicxulub crater—the asteroid impact site that wiped out the dinosaurs ☄ A huge thank you to Victoria Park Community Centre Inc., Curtin STEM Outreach, and Inspiring Western Australia for making this #NationalScienceWeek event possible and getting our team involved. • 🌈Today is Wear It Purple Day 💜 This year's theme, "Your Passion, Your Pride," reminds us of the importance of celebrating and supporting LGBTQIA+ perspectives, especially in spaces like STEM. When we bring diverse voices to the table, science becomes more accessible, creative, and innovative.

🌈Wear It Purple Theme 2024 Announcement📣 💜 'Your Passion, Your Pride' 💙Last year we celebrated Wear it Purple day with the theme "Write Your Story", in which we encouraged you all to rewrite the narrative on what our Queer lives can be, a reclamation of our stories as we look toward writing a more vibrant, prideful future. 💚So this year we considered what the progression of this would be and so... we present the 2024 Theme: 'Your Passion, Your Pride'. As LGBTQIA+ Individuals, so often our Pride is summed down to just one aspect of our identities. 💛Though we have Pride in these, we continue to be that and so much more. 🧡Your Pride is Your Passion & in that is Your Pride - Our Queerness in all that we do, Our Art, Our Jobs, Our Studies & in all that we take Pride. ❤️In Queer Excellence we continue to show through Our Passion's, Our Pride - each & everyday 🏳️🌈💜🏳️⚧️ #WearItPurple #WiPD24 #YourPassionYourPride #WearItPurpleDay2024 #SupportQueerYouth

Our Science Week 2024 Teacher Guide: Species Survival – More Than Just Sustainability is available NOW! As the first scientists of Australia, First Nations people have an enduring connection to Country. Australia boasts over 200,000 animal species and 24,000 species of native plants, contributing to its rich biodiversity. These incredible species have developed amazing ways to adapt and survive, and First Nations custodianship plays a crucial role in protecting them. Our guide aims to inspire students to learn more about First Nations people and their connection to Country, along with their millennia-rich history of helping to protect species survival beyond sustainability. It encourages building connections with local First Nations communities and organizations to deepen understanding of animal survival and adaptation through an Indigenous lens. This year, we have created two guides: one designed for classroom delivery and a citizen science guide for celebrating Science Week 2024 at home. A huge thank you to Australia Post for partnering with us and to Wingaru Education Pty Ltd for collaborating with us to deliver this deadly guide!
