At least 2.2 billion people worldwide have a near or distance vision impairment. In almost half of these cases, vision impairment could have been prevented or has yet to be addressed.(1) Furthermore, 30% of Eye Diseases have no cures. (2) Clinical trials are the essential pathway to develop new therapies that treat, prevent and cure blindness and eye disease. These therapies may also provide better treatment options for those diseases with existing treatments or options for those conditions with no treatment. On World Clinical Trials Day, we’re excited to introduce our new centre and a team passionate about blazing a trail for ophthalmic clinical trials. Today we celebrate the launch of Cerulea Clinical Trials – a new ophthalmic clinical trial centre established by the Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA) and located in The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. Our new centre aims to bring more global clinical trials to Victoria and give people living with vision loss and blindness early access to emerging new therapies. Backed by a $10 million investment from Breakthrough Victoria, Cerulea will specialise in trialing advanced therapeutics – including gene and cell therapies, biologics and medical devices – and aims to cement Victoria’s reputation as a world leader in preventing blindness and reducing the impact of vision loss. Thank you to the Minister for Medical Research Ben Carroll, Breakthrough Victoria Chair John Brumby and trial participant Kate and her family for helping us launch our new centre. May 20th is International Clinical Trials Day! We’ve come a long way since Surgeon mate James Lind conducted what is thought to have been the first ever clinical trial, aboard a tall ship patrolling the English Channel, in May 1747. Acting on a hunch, Lind treated the ship’s crew who were dying from scurvy with things he had available onboard, including vinegar, herbal tinctures, and citrus fruits. The two men who received only oranges and lemons, were almost completely recovered after only six days! It’s amazing to think that only a few hundred years later, the vigorous research conducted in clinical trials is responsible for many groundbreaking cures and treatments for both common and rare diseases. Here at Lions Vision Trials, we are passionate about our clinical trials, which enable the translation of research into groundbreaking treatments. Meet Barry and Gillian, two patients who have recently completed a 12-month clinical trial to investigate the efficacy of a new drug to treat wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD). “I signed the papers straight away. I wasn’t happy with the diagnosis, and I wanted to find a treatment to stop the disease getting worse,” Barry said. “I was so impressed with the Lions Vision Trials team. We were all on a first name basis, they were very friendly. I couldn’t praise them enough.” “The treatment appears to have halted any deterioration of my sight.
