We were delighted to host a visit from our wonderful supporters at Wen Giving recently. They had the opportunity to hear an in-depth update on the groundbreaking research we're conducting into childhood myopia—a condition affecting so many young lives around the world. 👓 The World Health Organization predicts that by 2050, 50 per cent of the global population will be affected by myopia, with 10 per cent of these individuals developing high myopia. In Australia, approximately 30 per cent of adults and 4.5 per cent of children aged 0-14 years are currently affected by myopia. Childhood myopia can progress to high myopia in adulthood, leading to devastating impacts on vision and quality of life. The increasing prevalence of myopia in children as young as six years old is a growing public concern. If left untreated, childhood myopia can result in severe vision problems later in life, including an increased risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma, and even blindness. Thanks to generous support from Wen Giving, our team is making significant strides in understanding and combatting this widespread issue. Together, we're paving the way for a future where children can see the world more clearly and live without the limitations of poor vision. 🌍👁️ Learn more: https://lnkd.in/g3G9XnNr Thank you Wen Giving for your continued commitment to eye health and for being such incredible partners in this important research! 🙌❤️ #lionseyeinstitute #childhoodmyopia #visionresearch #wengiving #hawaiian #eyehealth #bettervisionforall Pictured (L-R): Natalie Muzinich and Mei Wen from Wen Giving, Dr Jessica Mountford, Leah Royle from Wen Giving and Marie Claire Bennetts.

Watch out for The West Australian newspaper's 20/20 Vision Eye Care Edition lift out today. The lift out features Lions Eye Institute's ophthalmologist Dr Geoffrey Chan in an article about eye issues at times being a symptom of other medical problems such as diabetes, high cholesterol and thyroid disease. Dr Geoffrey Chan says "this is because the eyes are an optically clear organ, which allows us to visualise blood vessels and they reflect what's going on in the body". Also featured in the lift out are Professors Allison McKendrick and Andrew Turpin who are researching new visual field testing techniques. They are hoping that personalised visual field tests along with a range of imaging measures at the back of the eye will together help detect smaller changes in people's vision earlier. This is particularly important for people living with glaucoma. 🎂Happy Birthday to our Midland clinic!!🎂 The Lions Eye Institute Midland clinic officially turns two today! Opened on 12 August 2022, our Midland clinic has become a vital healthcare facility transforming local lives through exceptional eye care services. Led by Dr Hessom Razavi, the Midland clinic is providing patients in Perth’s eastern suburbs and surrounding regions with access to the highest quality eye health services. "Before we established the Midland clinic, public eye clinics were primarily located in areas with the lowest disease prevalence, leaving high-need areas underserved,” said Dr Razavi. The clinic features five subspecialist ophthalmologists covering glaucoma, retina, paediatrics, oculoplastics and general ophthalmology. We are honoured to serve the Midland community and surrounding areas and we are grateful for their support and trust. Our mission is to improve vision and eye health for everyone, and we look forward to continuing our work for many more years to come. Three cheers for Midland, hip hip hooray! Consultant Emeritus Professor Graham Barrett AM retired from clinical practice at the Lions Eye Institute in June 2024. Professor Barrett has made an extensive and varied contribution to ophthalmology, both nationally and internationally. He is founding and current President of the Australasian Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons and Past President of the Asia Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He is the recipient of major international awards and is the first Australian ophthalmologist to win, in the same year, the prestigious Binkhorst, Ridley, Sushruta and Choyce Awards. In 2023, he was also listed in the inaugural Ophthalmologist Power List Hall of Fame, being recognised for the impact of his work that will last well beyond his lifetime. Professor Barrett has developed innovative instruments aimed at improving outcomes for patients undergoing cataract surgery, which are widely used by ophthalmic surgeons. We thank him for almost as many years of working with us as a clinician as we have been operating as an Institute 😄.

At the Lions Eye Institute we continue to advocate for better access to healthcare services for people living in the east metropolitan corridor, including Midland and the surrounding area. Today, Dr Glen Power, CEO, met with Hon Michelle Roberts MLA (Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and Member for Midland) to continue our dialogue about the Lions Eye Institute's Midland public eye clinic proposal and health services in the eastern metropolitan region. The Hon Michelle Roberts jointly opened the existing Lions Eye Institute Midland Clinic in 2022. As a Minister in previous Labor Governments and as a long-standing local Member, Michelle has been instrumental in encouraging and facilitating the establishment of many health and social services in the east metropolitan region. We will continue to work closely with her as we advocate for this important initiative. Pictured: Hon Michelle Roberts MLA and Dr Glen Power on the steps of Western Australia's Parliament House.
