What an outstanding success. The Bay to Birdwood is done, the media attention has been amazing, and the all-important attendance numbers are in. For the first time in a long time, we have hit a police estimate of over 100,000 people lining the route of the Bay to Birdwood. This was noticeable. There were people all the way along the route with big groups this year in places I have never seen groups of people before. It was amazing. (Well done to the people that took my advice to go to Bennett Memorial Reserve on North East Road – great crowd there!) Thank you to everyone who made the day special. The organisers from the History Trust of South Australia, the volunteers, the wonderful sponsors and partners, the people who bought tickets for the Finish Festival, the people who prepared, drove or where passengers in the vehicles, and the 100,000 people on the side of the road – thank you so much for being part of one of the world’s great historic motoring events. Matthew Stead’s story is exactly why I am so proud of the courageous decision by the History Trust of South Australia to introduce an award for EV conversions of historic vehicles in the Bay to Birdwood. Matthew entered his EV converted BMW in the 2022 Bay to Birdwood, the first time the award was offered. At that stage, the main concern for Matthew, and every entrant in the awards, be it the EV conversion award or the prestigious Concours d’Elegance, is that the entrant completes the demanding uphill journey from the beachside start, through the City of Adelaide and up through the hills to the National Motor Museum in the beautiful village of Birdwood. Matthew’s car completed the journey successfully but he did not win the award. In 2023, Matthew entered again but the standard of competition had increased with professional conversions coming into the competition. He had taken some lesson from his 2022 experience, but it was not enough to gain success in the award. After the 2023 Bay to Birdwood, Matthew asked for some feedback from the judges which he then acted on. He removed all the non-original instrumentation and returned the car interior to as original as possible. He made it clear that there was a reversal pathway and that he had retained the original engine. He prepared it for judging on the Saturday and then successfully completed the run on the Sunday, claiming his reward for hard work in the form of the EV conversion award. This is why I think this initiative is so important. Mathew would have undertaken his conversion regardless. By keeping Matthew welcomed in the historic motoring community, by keeping him “in the tent”, he has maintained more of the historical integrity of his car than he would have if he was excluded from it. I had a fantastic day at the awards judging for the Bay to Birdwood today. I thought I should share some photos. It was great to look at some EV converted historic vehicles with Nick Palousis and Steven Szyndler from 2XE. There were also some wonderful classic and vintage cars presented for judging. A wonderful Rugby driven down from Burra was a favourite with a couple visiting from California. There were some interesting vehicles, in-period props and some very appropriate period clothing. A couple of beautiful Jaguars came over from Victoria with a huge supporter group. They looked fantastic on the lawns of South Australian Museum courtyard. Very happy that the Bureau of Meteorology got it right. Weather was fantastic. Tomorrow is the big day when all 1500 vehicles make their way from a beachside suburb to the south west of the City of Adelaide, up into the hills to the north east and to the National Motor Museum at Birdwood in the Adelaide Hills Wine Region. At last. The Bay to Birdwood is this weekend!! One of the world’s great historic motoring events and it is here in the City of Adelaide. Start planning your days now. Saturday 19th October 9:00am to 12:00pm Concours and awards judging is your opportunity to see the glamour vehicles op close and get an insight into the formal judging process (but quite uniquely, they can only win if they complete the 67km course, in the time allowed, on the following day). Held at the Migration Museum & SA Museum courtyards, 82 Kintore Ave, Adelaide (just off North Terrace). Undeniably, the Bay to Birdwood is emotionally in the heart of the City of Adelaide, and for this part, geographically as well! Sunday 20th October vehicles congregate at Barratt Reserve West Beach before the first vehicles depart at 8:15am. Be early to get a spot alongside the route to watch the parade. (I gave some tips on the best places in my post earlier this week.) Then head up to the Finish Festival for lunch at the National Motor Museum in Birdwood. They have special 1990s entry pricing this year making the Bay to Birdwood a really affordable family day out. I just love the Bay to Birdwood and I hope you do too. It is a cultural and tourism event icon, held in trust for the people of South Australia by the History Trust of South Australia.

The Bay to Birdwood is this coming Sunday (20th October) and I can’t wait! The weather forecast seems perfect, having just looked at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology seven day forecast on their website. “Mostly sunny” and 24 degrees Celsius. “Goldilocks” weather – not too hot, not too cold, just right. Now is the time to start planning your day if you can be in the City of Adelaide or the Adelaide Hills Council region. People often ask me about the route and where is the best place to view the passing parade. My first piece of advice is to get out and find a spot early. The oldest vehicles will depart Barratt reserve at 8:15am to enable them to get ahead while the traffic is still light.  I have put some times on the route map to indicate my estimates of when I think the first vehicles will be passing. If you normally view at the Kurralta Park supermarket carpark, you will need to be there no later than 8:30 if you want to see the polished brass of the 100-year-old veterans stream past. The most popular places seem to be the South Parklands on Greenhill Road, Civic Park in the City of Tea Tree Gully, The Gully Public House just before the hills ascent, and the main street of Gumeracha. I recommend getting an early start and finding a spot on ANZAC highway. There are plenty of places to get a coffee before setting up your deck chair. I know Incognito Cafe Australia in Plympton is opening especially for Bay to Birdwood spectators on the day. (Incognito is a client, poor Brett Dowsett has had to listen to me talking about the Bay to Birdwood for months!) If you want to do the full breakfast picnic experience, I recommend Dequetteville Terrace, which always seems to have less people and plenty of space for a family picnic. You might even see a car club or two meeting there to watch the parade. The city end of North East Road, between the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) building and Grand Junction Road usually offers plenty of spots for a deck chair or two. I would pick Bennett Memorial Reserve as my choice spot on this section of the route. They are my three top suggestions and they are all the city side of Civic Park. This will give you time to watch all of the vehicles parade past you and then you can make your way up to Birdwood for the Finish Festival. All in all, with the special 1990s pricing being offered for Finish Festival entry tickets into the National Motor Museum by the History Trust of South Australia, it make a fantastic and affordable full day of entertainment for the family. “Field Trips Matter!” Ask any of our clients and they will tell you that this is one of my key strategy/marketing mantras, perhaps only second to “Constant and Consistent”. If you really want to understand your customer, you have to go to them and meet them face-to-face (or “in-real-life" as Kati Barklund would say). I had a wonderful day yesterday doing just that. I when out to see one of our relatively new primary producer clients, YFRESH, at their farm near Berri in the beautiful South Australia Riverland. YFRESH grow what I would call exotic fruits: persimmons, quinces and jujubes. We started with a farm tour before coming back to the house for a strategy meeting. I found it really useful, in helping to understand their business, to look at their orchards and listen to them talking about their issues in situ. It also really reinforced in my mind some of the key strengths that they have - all insights that become evident when you have seen the farm with your own eyes. If you are a consultant from the city, genuinely trying to help people run their businesses in rural and regional areas, you have a responsibility to go to those communities and listen to people, to try and understand their situations a little better. Last week I was privileged to be invited by Adelaide XR Lounge to experience the new game “Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine VR - Defenders of Avarax” in the Zero Latency VR Adelaide free roam arena. This coincided with the official public launch of the VR game on 25th September 2024. As per usual, Andrew Foo and his team gave us a fantastic experience. My game nickname (according to my post-university aged daughters) is “Fall Over Guy”, somewhat reflective of my gaming skills … so it is fair to say I am not a natural. However, the Game Master made the experience easy, even for someone relatively unfamiliar with VR gaming like me. The free roam VR experience allows you to really feel as though you are living out the story in a completely different world. The “deep lore” and narrative from the Warhammer franchise is absolutely fascinating. Early players were rewarded with a specially minted medal. I am sure these will become a collector’s item! I loved it so much that I went back for another experience two days later. It really is worth giving it a go if you have never done a free roam VR experience before. Andrew Foo has established himself as one of the "go-to" experts in Australia for VR/XR experiences. Certainly you know this if you talk to him about what is happening in the market, the best equipment, the most robust technology and even the best narrative games. But Andrew's real advantage is how well he understands his customers and how committed he is to giving them the experience there are looking for. Literally Brilliant Pty Ltd did some work on Customer Archetypes with Andrew for Adelaide XR Lounge and Zero Latency VR Adelaide. We identified a group of corporate customers who were looking for a safe way to bring diverse groups together, put them in a stressful (albeit a fun, adrenaline charged) situation and get them to work better as a team ... as if their lives depended on it. Andrew and his team have put together a suite of activities with exceptional game masters to help even the least VR/tech savvy people to get the most out of the experience. They can keep all the members of a large group engaged with side experiences (through Hero Zone and vrCAVE) even while they are not undertaking the main exercise (usually in their Zero Latency VR Arena). Their process includes a teams' performance discussion at the end. Most importantly, they make sure everyone has a great time. I was very honoured to be invited to speak (in a personal capacity) on EV conversions of historic motor vehicle at the annual meeting of the Australian Historic Motoring Federation. It was held a couple of weekends ago at the iconic Largs Pier Hotel (part of the Dean Group of Hotels) along the Adelaide suburban beachfront. People undertaking EV Conversions is becoming a significant trend in the Historic Motoring world with a number of businesses servicing the market internationally (Everrati, Lunaz, Fellten, Electrogenic) and here in Australia (Jaunt, Finch Restorations and others). In June 2022, the History Trust of South Australia announced that the Bay to Birdwood would be the world’s first Tier One historic motoring event to offer an award for EV Converted historic vehicles. This year will be the third year of offering this prize at the Bay to Birdwood. The historic motoring community needs to be actively engaged in the process of pursuing sustainability and there are many opportunities we should explore. Some people are choosing to undertake EV conversions of their historic vehicles.
