  • New Clarification on Indoor Aquatic Facilities & Lightning Safety Recent updates to AS1768 Lightning Protection have raised important questions about lightning safety for indoor aquatic facilities. Traditionally, only outdoor pools were evacuated during thunderstorms, as there were no known incidents of lightning-related injuries in indoor pools. However, a recent update to the standard suggests that both indoor and outdoor facilities should be treated the same regarding lightning risks. After a LIWA member raised this concern with the National Aquatic Industry Committee (NAIC) in 2024, the committee sought further clarification. In December 2024, Standards Australia advised that if an indoor pool is housed within a properly earthed structure, the building itself acts as a lightning protection system. In such cases, only testing is required to confirm compliance with AS1768. This is great news for indoor aquatic facility managers, who can now refer to the updated Guidelines for Safe Pool Operations (GSPO) to plan their response protocols. 📌 Learn more: https://bit.ly/3PW1pqG 💡 Do you currently evacuate indoor pools during thunderstorms? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

  • LIWA Aquatics recently celebrated 20 years of the Watch Around Water program, a national benchmark in water safety. This initiative, launched in 2004, has transformed aquatic facilities by promoting shared responsibility between parents and lifeguards to prevent drownings. As summer approaches, we urge parents to stay vigilant and follow the program’s guidelines to ensure safe, enjoyable visits to public pools. Together, we can continue protecting future generations. Learn more about this life-saving program and its impact over the past two decades. Read more here: https://bit.ly/3ZQoSym
