Late last month, Council hosted a free community workshop in Kensington Grove, focusing on cultural burning as a holistic approach to land management. The event brought together the Rural Fire Services Queensland, the University of Queensland, and Wirrinyah Conservation Services to emphasise the significance of using fire strategically—not only to mitigate bushfire risks but also to enhance local ecosystems and wildlife habitats. 🔥 Representatives shared valuable insights into fire management with around 60 attendees. Although weather conditions were too hot and dry for a live cultural burn demonstration, Indigenous fire practitioners Jake Anderson and Kruze Summers of Wirrinyah led an informative bushwalk, sharing their cultural knowledge on environmental indicators and the optimal timing and techniques for burning various landscapes. It was an engaging and educational experience for all involved! This workshop was supported by grant funding from the Australian Government 🙏 #culturalburning #landmanagement #firemanagement #leadengageempower #lvrc #bushfiremitigation #coolburning #mosaicburning #burnpractitioners Queensland Fire Department The University of Queensland Wirrinyah Pty Ltd Kate Burns Lisa Swales Justine Rice Annabel Smith

Lockyer Waters Community Centre is officially open! 🎊🎉 Last month, Lockyer Valley Regional Council officially unveiled the community centre and welcomed residents and stakeholders to tour and celebrate the new facility. 🙌 The $850,000 project features a semi-commercial kitchen, new appliances, ambulant and disability bathrooms, a storage facility, a large undercover deck and a 20,000L water tank. ✅🍽💧 This project received funding from the Australian Government’s Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants Program, which aims to support residents by upgrading community halls to ensure they are equipped for future disaster emergencies. 🔨👏 These improvements not only prepare these hubs for disaster emergencies but also create spaces that foster social inclusion, economic support and community resilience. 💪🤩 To see a snapshot of the opening event and what’s on offer at the facility, check out the video 👇 #lockyerwaters #lvrc #leadengageempower #strongercommunities #community National Emergency Management Agency
