Australian women earn nearly $30,000 less than men each year, according to the latest Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) report. For every $1 earned by a man, a woman earns 78 cents. Across 7,800 businesses, 72.2% of employers reported a gender pay gap in favour of men. There has been some progress however, with 56% of employers reducing their gender pay gap in 2023–24 compared to the previous year. These figures do not mean that women are paid less than men for the same job. Paying men and women equally for the same role or work of equal or comparable value is a legal requirement in Australia. Instead, gender pay gaps reflect underrepresentation of women in senior positions, fewer men working part-time or taking parental leave, and long-standing differences in how typically female and male dominated industries are valued and paid. So, where to from here? Transparency around pay gaps is a first step, but the real work lies in addressing structural barriers to progression. That means businesses investing in inclusive leadership, flexible working policies that support all caregivers, and equitable promotion pathways. Curious how different industries compare?
