About us
The office of Lovell Chen is located on the lands of the Wurundjeri people. We acknowledge and pay our respects to the traditional custodians and the Elders of this nation, and to the continuation of the culture, stories and connection to the land and extend this respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Lovell Chen is a multi-disciplinary practice with more than 40 years’ experience in architecture and heritage. Our team combines architects and designers with heritage consultants, planners, conservation and landscape specialists, historians, researchers, materials experts and other specialists in aspects of the built environment. We are a dynamic, innovative practice in the way we approach our work — bringing together strategic thinking, design skills, technical expertise, research and experience. We are led by six principals, each recognised leaders in their fields. Founding principal and award-winning architect Kai Chen is responsible for design direction and, with principal Milica Tumbas, the management of architectural projects. Peter Lovell, a key participant in the fields of heritage and conservation practice, and also a founding principal, leads project teams in both areas. The heritage team is led by principals Kate Gray, Adam Mornement and Katherine White, and the practice principal is Anne-Marie Treweeke. Lovell Chen works on built environment projects of all types and sizes, from large scale former industrial complexes to individual houses and structures. Our architecture, conservation and heritage teams work collaboratively, with clients and project team members, to deliver a truly integrated service.

Suzanne Zahra and Stuart Hanafin travelled to Brisbane to undertake a site inspection of the (former) Treasury Building to assist in its refurbishment and conversion for academic use for Griffith University. The building has a long history housing Queensland Government offices and more recently, was the site of the casino and hotel. The Lovell Chen team are working with the Brisbane office of Cox Architecture. #LovellChen #Architecture #Heritage

After Federation Square’s 2019 inclusion in the Victorian Heritage Register, Lovell Chen were engaged to prepare a Conservation Management Plan (including Design Principles) for this architectural icon and vital public place; we have subsequently assisted the Fed Square’s public managers with statutory heritage approvals for several major projects, including a new Lighting Master Plan prepared by Arup. Designed holistically and with consideration for Fed Square’s innovative architectural compositions as well as physical conservation requirements, the Lighting Master Plan has vastly improved the experience of the place as a nighttime public setting and destination, and further stages of implementation are planned. Stage 1 of this important project was recently recognised with a chapter Award of Excellence by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IESANZ, Victoria / Tasmania). Congratulations to the team at Arup (including Ilze Kundzina and Tim Hunt) and at MAP Co.
How did we create a magical night-time experience at Fed Square, Melbourne? We collaborated with the Melbourne Arts Precinct Corporation (MAP Co) to explore lighting design to bring the square to life, day and night. Through research and testing, we created a lighting masterplan that includes customisable lighting set within the buildings’ facades which can activated in any colour, any time. Our team was on hand to implement the first stage of the masterplan, lighting the circulation areas, Main Plaza, Atrium, and Edge auditorium. We also assessed how the existing lighting and urban design influenced people’s perceptions of safety and listened to personal experiences. Our design prioritised measures to improve areas where women and girls would feel most vulnerable. Explore the project: https://bit.ly/3ZL9e8R #LightingDesign #Masterplan #Melbourne #Safety

The Greenline Project Master Plan seeks to rejuvenate physical access, ecological infrastructure and cultural experiences along the north bank of the Birrarung (Yarra River), a waterscape of immense cultural and historical value to Traditional Owners and all Victorians. The Greenline Master Plan has now been recognised by the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects with a 2024 National Award of Excellence. Lovell Chen have been thrilled to contribute to the Greenline Project Master Plan (and subsequent precinct planning) as heritage consultants within an integrated design team co-led by ASPECT Studios and Taylor Cullity Lethlean. Congratulations to the Aspect x TCL team and the City of Melbourne for this well-deserved national honour. https://lnkd.in/gBtYKV5S #Architecture #Heritage #Conservation #LovellChen

Lydia visited Heide Museum of Modern Art to celebrate the new Yaluk Langa ('River's Edge' in Woi-wurrung language) gathering space in the Museum of Modern Art's parkland, by the Birrarung (Yarra River). Lovell Chen has a long association with Heide and helped get heritage approval for the Yaluk Langa landscape works, which are located within the registered land of the Victorian Heritage Register place Heide II (also known as Heide Modern). The Yaluk Langa gathering space is a special addition to this significant landscape setting, yet appears as if it has been by the riverside for many years. Lydia joined the Heide team, Wurundjeri Elders and community, and other stakeholders for a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony by Uncle Bill Nicholson Jnr. This was followed by planting three new Manna Gum trees and walking with Uncle Bill to hear him yarn about the three nearby trees which were scarred over the past couple of years to represent the three surviving Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung families. The Yaluk Langa gathering space inspires both contemplation and yarning, reminding us of the importance of caring for Country and continued collaboration with First Peoples. #LovellChen
