✅ Advocacy Win! ✅ A big advocacy win today with the Cook government announcing $750,000 to go towards bid costs for contractor tendering on major or complex government projects, under the new ‘Bid Contribution Policy’. This announcement is part of the suite of landmark changes formed and lobbied for by MBAWA, in our ‘WA Building Industry Reform Package 2022’. The Policy announced today, as part of the Cook Government’s ‘Safe and Fair Reform Package’ will significantly improve outcomes through procurement and contracting frameworks on government projects. “This is an important initiative developed by the Cook Government following consultation with MBA and top Tier 1 and 2 builders on how to increase market capacity in Western Australia’s building and construction sector,” said Finance Minister Sue Ellery. MBAWA’s Chief Executive Officer, Matthew Pollock, said: “Offsetting bid costs for large or complex projects will encourage more contractors to bid. Greater competition will mean better bids and better value for money for taxpayers.” “There is a record pipeline of major projects to deliver in WA. This initiative is about industry and Government working collaboratively to ensure we deliver the major project pipeline in the most effective way possible.” You can view the complete Bid Contribution Policy document here: https://bit.ly/4dYJYj1

Releasing its Future of the Workforce report, Master Builders Australia forecasts the building and construction industry needs 130,000 additional workers this year to overcome workforce shortages. This shortfall is on top of those required for natural attrition and requires federal and state governments to prioritise reforms that will attract and retain more workers. “While it is a significant number, this presents an opportunity for growth in an industry that is pivotal to the nation’s economic success,” Master Builders CEO Denita Wawn said. The report takes a closer look at the current state of the industry, the impact of chronic workforce shortages, and recommends sensible policy measures to relieve the pressure. As the country’s second largest industry employer, one in 11 Australians work in building and construction, but the number of people joining the industry each year is not enough to keep up with demand. Ms Wawn added: “This is the very workforce needed to deliver the homes and supporting infrastructure we desperately need. “Productivity has declined 18 per cent over the last decade putting significant pressures on workers and employers. “Despite challenges, the industry is in a unique position to grow and innovate. “There is a strong pipeline of work for the industry across the housing, commercial and civil sectors, presenting a great opportunity for people to join.” “There’s no quick fix to the critical workforce shortages,” Ms Wawn said, “it will require a holistic approach across Federal Government portfolios from migration, skills and training through to industrial relations. “Proposed solutions include increasing trade apprenticeships, leveraging skilled migration from similar regions, and fostering a diverse, inclusive culture to attract new talent from across the economy.” Read the full report here https://ow.ly/clHb50TuYWP

Introducing the 2024 Commonwealth Bank Best Regional Project - Great Southern, built by DEVLYN CONSTRUCTION. The Shire of Ravensthorpe Cultural Precinct by Devlyn Construction was a stand-out entry in the awards this past weekend. Crafted from 30-year-old unused plantation stock from Denmark, the level of detail and use of wood in the new 1,400sqm innovative hub is something you don’t see every day. Using timber for both the structure and façade offered the advantage of prefabrication off-site, lightweight construction, durability, and an environmentally friendly material selection. The result is a visually stunning building that enhances community connections and end-user experiences. A full list of award winners can be viewed here: https://lnkd.in/gDerYaQV
