Last week Nicole Wyche presented the findings of WWF's Australia's Green Iron Key Report: Unlocking Asian Steel Decarbonisation, Securing Australia's Economic Future to MECLA's WG5a - Steel. Nicole and James Bowen co-authored the research, which outlines the opportunities for Australia to become a global player in the low carbon steel economy. Learn more about their findings by watching the recording of her presentation below. You can read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gH9BB6RK

MECLA brings together the drive to reduce embodied carbon in the building and construction industry.
About us
Materials & Embodied Carbon Leaders’ Alliance (MECLA) brings together different sectors across the building and construction supply chain to reduce embodied carbon in the industry. Collectively, we can gain a better understanding of barriers to uptake and find the solutions that will be vital to moving ahead. MECLA recognises the growing demand for lower and zero-carbon materials worldwide and is determined to transform the building and construction sector to reach Net-Zero emissions. Together, we are keen to explore how we can work together to move Australia towards a zero-carbon economy and position Australia in the top five zero-carbon materials suppliers.

How can we radically reduce carbon emissions in the building industry? What are the emerging technologies for decarbonsing the building industry? How can we ensure the entire lifecycle of building development is sustainable? These are just a few of the critical questions we’ll explore at the Decarbonising Building Industry (DBI) 2024 Conference, hosted at the University of Melbourne. DBI2024 is set to bring together global leaders, researchers, and industry professionals to address one of the most urgent challenges of our time: reducing carbon emissions in the building sector. Under the theme “Decarbonising the Building Industry,” we’ll discuss innovative strategies, cutting-edge technologies, and sustainable practices that will revolutionize how buildings are designed, constructed, and operated. From low-carbon materials to AI and blockchain solutions, the conference covers the entire lifecycle of building development. With keynote speakers Stanford Harrison (DCCEEW, AUS), Prof. Tuan Ngo (University of Melbourne, AUS), Prof. Mat Santamouris (UNSW, AUS), Prof. Thomas Lützkendorf (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany), Prof. Harpa Birgisdóttir (Aalborg University, Denmark), Prof. Vivian WY Tam FTSE. (WSU, AUS), Professor Wei PAN (The University of Hong Kong), Prof. Chris Knapp (Building4.0 CRC, AUS), alongside expert-led panels and roundtable discussions, DBI2024 promises to be a catalyst for meaningful change and collaboration in our industry. Major Road Projects Victoria and Seymour Whyte have switched over to a hydrogen-powered Clyde Road Upgrade project site! The hydrogen generator utilises hydrogen within the fuel cell to recharge a 100 kVa battery, emitting no carbon and only deionised water. This hybrid fuel cell and battery technology will help to ensure minimal energy is wasted in the system, with an expected saving of 5,000 litres of diesel across the eight-week trial. City of Casey

This week’s CIA NSW Seminar is here! Don’t miss the "Low Carbon Concrete Seminar" on Wednesday, September 25, at 1:30 PM, at Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club in Sydney. Seats are limited—REGISTER NOW to secure your spot!- https://lnkd.in/evV4X--U Low carbon concrete is designed to reduce the carbon footprint and environmental impact compared to traditional concrete. Achieving emission reduction from concrete requires a holistic approach, considering every aspect of the concrete life cycle, including but not limited to material selection, transportation, production, design, procurement, and construction. Our seminar will introduce the MECLA guide as well as providing an industry overview of low carbon concrete options from experience sustainability practitioners in the concrete industry. Presenters - Niki Jackson, MSc (Eng) ACT, MIMMM, MICT, DFSS, Director, Sustainable Future by Design James Logie, Director, Strategy, Planning and Innovation, Infrastructure NSW Craig Heidrich, Managing Director, HBM Group Monica Richter, Senior Manager, Low Carbon Futures Program, WWF-Australia and Project Director, Materials & Embodied Carbon Leaders’ Alliance, Advisor Proudly sponsored by: SmartCrete CRC, Holcim Australia, Carmix Metalgalante Concrete Mixer, and Pilecom Equipment Proudly supported by: Materials & Embodied Carbon Leaders’ Alliance #concreteinaustralia #concrete #inthemix #concreteconstruction #excellenceinconcrete #construction #design #concretestructures #CIAEvents #Lowcarbonconcrete

Today 25 MECLA collaborators toured the different material innovation labs at UNSW, including the infrastructure lab, the asphalt lab and the heavy structures lab. MECLA is all about systems change. Innovation in material use is a crucial part of that change, and UNSW Engineering had it on display in full today. There were some awesome quickfire presentations giving us a flavour of contemporary research in the university by Ali Kashani on 3D printing concrete in construction, Wenkui Dong on nanotechnology applications for concrete sustainability, Ailar Hajimohammadi on the use of waste in concrete, Taehwon Kim on the beneficiation of mine tailings, Ehab Hamed on insulating switch panels, and Hamid Valipour on combining timber and steel for reinforced strength. It's impossible to recap the sheer breadth of research MECLA members learned about today. A truly incredible experience. Hopefully further collaborations are born from some of them! Thank you to Hamid Valipour and UNSW for hosting us!
