“Mel helped me get through my treatment.”❤️🩹 Mum-of-two Clair Schwencke was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2020 and was supported by McGrath Breast Care Nurse Mel through treatment. Since then, Clair has been raising awareness about breast health and educating friends and family about the role McGrath Breast Care Nurses play in supporting people and families through their cancer experience. She’s also held several fundraising events in support of the McGrath Foundation. “Last year, my boss who owns Fab Industrial Logistics, hired out the top bar of the Shangri La Hotel. Everyone attending made a donation,” says Clair. “My boss also donated tickets to see Taylor Swift in concert, others donated a holiday to Bali, boat trips… we also had a panel of women talking about breast cancer.” The night raised over $20,000 to help ensure that no one goes through breast cancer without the care of a McGrath Breast Care Nurse. “My older brother died of breast cancer 13 years ago, so the possibility of me getting breast cancer was always in my mind.”❤️🩹 David, 70, was diagnosed with breast cancer after he experienced pain and discovered a lump on his chest while chain sawing one day. Despite the family history of breast cancer, he says he “virtually never” checked his breasts. David, and his wife Lynne met their McGrath Breast Care Nurse Dana after being referred by his specialist. “My wife and I found her kind, caring and her professional support immensely helpful. She provided us with information about breast cancer and treatment, including information related to male breast cancer. “We were also enormously impressed with her concern for our whole family, including Lynne and our adult children. Dana always had plenty of time to see us and her support was 10/10!”💖 While breast cancer is something that is often associated with women, each year, 217 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia. If you, or someone you know is experiencing breast cancer, McGrath Breast Care Nurses are here to help, for free. You don’t even need a referral. When volunteer surf lifesaver Lizzy Sargeant was diagnosed with breast cancer, her family, friends and local club rallied around her.💞 On the day of her first chemotherapy appointment, Lizzy met her McGrath Breast Care Nurse, Kim Wright, who supported her through treatment. “Kim was the person I could ring and cry to,” says Lizzy. “She was always helpful, so knowledgeable and able to answer so many questions.” To show her appreciation for McGrath Breast Care Nurses like Kim, Lizzy’s daughter Michaela and her friends, Luke and Lara organised, ‘Laps4Lizzy’. The event saw swimmers take the plunge and swim laps to raise money in support of the McGrath Foundation. “Luke said, ‘how about we do a 21km swim and we’ll try and do it in 7 hours, because 1 in 7 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime,” explains Lizzy. The day raised more than $36,870 to help ensure that no one goes through breast cancer without the care of a McGrath Breast Care Nurse. “Everyone got involved and swam laps and came to cheer the swimmers,” says Lizzy. “It was such an incredible day, and people were incredibly generous.” Feeling inspired by Lizzy’s fundraiser? “Michelle, our McGrath Breast Care Nurse has been a shining light. From day one, she went to the first oncology appointment, welcomed us and took care of our children whilst my husband Trevor and I had to listen to that first important conversation of what we were about to go through.” ❤️🩹 Mum of two, Isla Foy was 33-weeks pregnant when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. After starting chemotherapy while pregnant, Isla went into labour early and her son Freddie was born 6 weeks premature. While he was receiving care in the special care nursery, Isla continued her chemotherapy treatment. Throughout their experience Isla and Trevor have been supported by McGrath Breast Care Nurse Michelle. Isla’s mother-in-law also had breast cancer and sadly passed away in February this year. In tribute to his late mother and wife, Trevor did a push up challenge raising over $5,000 for the McGrath Foundation. 💪 Together, they have also shared their experience on social media at Isla's Road to Recovery 💖Feeling inspired by Isla and Trevor’s story?
