For ASX-listed mining companies, it's never been more important to stay ahead of the cyber threat curve. A great write up by Joshua Smith at MiningNews.net and some very sound advice from Darktrace regional VP ANZ Sushant Arora. #insight
It was a pleasure to speak with Joshua Smith at MiningNews.net about the Australian Government’s recently tabled #cybersecurity bill. The significant number of high-profile cases in the mining industry raises the question: why, specifically, are mining companies attacked? Often, the answer is simply because they have the cash to pay. Mining companies — and particularly publicly listed ones — are known to have big balance sheets. Even junior explorers often have several millions of dollars in the kitty. And the consequences from an attack often go beyond the payment demands: · Companies suffer reputational damage · IP and material data is stolen · Sensitive data and personal information are shared online Moreover, the impact on operational technology (OT) in the mining sector can be severe. Cyberattacks targeting IT systems can lead to attackers gaining access to OT, potentially causing disruptions in critical operations, compromising safety systems, and leading to production shutdowns. Ultimately, investors lose out when hits to profit, credibility and reputation directly affects share prices. It is a company's duty to its shareholders — the owners of the business — to ensure its cyber maturity can stay ahead of the curve. Darktrace
