MS Australia is delighted to partner with the national Open Coast to Coast Australian Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis (OCCAMS) led by Professor Tri Phan at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. Using cutting-edge technology, OCCAMS is applying a 'molecular razor' to solve the enigmatic role of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in MS. The multidisciplinary team, including immunologist Professor Phan, neurologist Dr Jennifer Massey, systems biologist Dr Seyhan Yazar, and Mr Mark Elisha, who lives with MS, spoke about "A new hope for MS" in a public seminar on Thursday, 24 October. Professor Phan said, "We are not here to solve esoteric conundrums; we are here to improve the lives of people with MS". Mr Elisha poignantly noted: "MS teaches you to think on your feet. Involvement in research has given me back control of my MS. The most important thing I would like to see from this project is understanding the root cause of MS, so we can look towards prevention". Dr Fiona McKay from MS Australia said, "We are delighted to partner with a team of such a high calibre on such an important project. A better understanding of the role of EBV in MS could open the door to completely new avenues for treatment and move us closer to the ultimate goal of preventing MS for good."
