Porcelain homewares and lighting, handmade in Sydney. Designed by Shelley Simpson.
About us
Mud Australia was founded in 1994. Mud's handmade porcelain range, designed by Shelley Simpson, combines craft, colour, clean lines, palette and functionality. The end result is a product that neatly intersects a minimalist aesthetic with an artisan finish. As a small business we strongly believe in the global values of craft and community. We actively build relationships with the people who buy, use and love our product. How we do it All Mud Australia porcelain is handmade in our Sydney factory by our staff of professional and in-house ceramicists. Each piece is designed to last and manufactured using the best materials available. The range evolves seasonally with the addition of new shapes and colours.

We’re always striving to do things better—whether in design, production, culture, social impact, or environmental responsibility. Sustainability is at the core of our design philosophy. Our products transcend seasonality, complement any interior, and are made to last. Each new addition to our range is designed to be both useful and harmonious with existing designs. We believe that conscious and responsible consumption begins with thoughtful design. By managing our entire process in our Sydney studio, from concept to finished product, we make a meaningful impact on our team, customers, and the environment. Having full control over production ensures that our products meet the highest standards of safety, material quality, and waste minimization. Beloved home cook Julia Busuttil Nishimura always knows the right dish for the occasion — regardless of season, party size or mood — and understands the power food has to bring people together, whether that's to prepare a meal as a family or enjoy the delicious results. This warming, seasonal Apple and Rhubarb Pudding is one of Ostro's favourite things to make when the weather turns cold. "Still warm from the oven, it is perfect with a generous pour of cream. It’s almost like a crumble, but with a spongy cake on top instead, it is really comforting and sees you well into the cooler months. Substitute the rhubarb for blackberries, fresh in late summer or frozen in the depths of winter." Baked using our Pudding Bowl in Ash, Flan Dish in Milk and served in our Pebble Bowl Cereal in Mist. Meet Alfred Lowe, the 2024 Shelley Simpson Ceramics Prize recipient. For Alfie, clay is not merely a medium but a conduit for exploring themes of Country and identity. Alfred Lowe, is an Arrernte artist hailing from Snake Well in the Central Desert, to reflect on his journey from the heart of Australia to the global stage of ceramics. Growing up in Alice Springs, Alfred's artistic roots run deep, nurtured by encounters with legends like Clifford Possum and the vibrant Araluen Arts and Cultural Precinct. Now based in Adelaide, Alfred's passion for ceramics ignites daily at the APY Art Collective Studio, where he crafts vessels that echo the spirit of his homeland. "It's really exciting," exclaims Alfred, reflecting on receiving the Shelley Simpson Ceramics Prize's 2024 award. "To be recognised by Shelley and Mud Australia in this way. Knowing that Shelley is an expert in both ceramics and business, and holding a long career in arts and design too, it really is an honour." Alfred's portrait and works are now on display and available for purchase in the windows of our 12 Mud Australia store globally. Last Week in Copenhagen — a family-style dinner with Denmark's leading design voice, Ark Journal as part of their Design/Dialogue exhibition at 3daysofdesign. The event took place at Apollo Kantine, within the beautiful Kunsthal Charlottenborg, and was led by the talented Frederik Bille Brahe and his team. The evening featured spring flowers, delicious food served exclusively on Mud Australia porcelain, and insightful conversations with global design leaders. The space was transformed with sculptural floral displays and tables adorned in our signature pastel hues. The extended daylight of Copenhagen's summer cast a warm glow, with glimpses of the iconic harbour through the windows. A highlight of the evening was a five-course meal prepared by renowned chef Frederik Bille Brahe. His innovative Nordic cuisine, assembled from the finest seasonal ingredients. A night to remember. Sustainability is core to our business. We've been carbon neutral since 2020 and are always striving for improvement. From design to delivery, we minimise our impact. This weekend Mud Australia stores across the world will celebrate Earth Day - a global movement where over 192 countries work together to drive positive action for our planet. Mud Australia will be donating 10% of profits from this day to Earthday.org's initiatives ranging from ending plastic pollution, conservation and restoration, climate and environmental literacy, food and regenerative agriculture, to acting against climate change. Earth Day's mission is to diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide. Let’s make change together.
