The Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) is the legislated peak body for Victoria’s 79 local councils.

About us

The Municipal Association of Victoria is the peak representative and advocacy body for Victoria's 79 councils. The MAV was formed in 1879 and the Municipal Association Act 1907 anointed the MAV the official voice of local government in Victoria. Today, the MAV is a driving and influential force behind a strong and strategically positioned local government sector. Our role, broadly speaking is to represent and advocate the interests of local government, lobby for a 'fairer deal' for councils, raise the sector's profile, ensure its long-term security and provide policy advice, strategic advice, capacity building programs and insurance services to local government. The success of the MAV stems from its people and the Association has prided itself on building a quality team of staff and consultants to ensure that the needs of its members are met, and that the MAV is well positioned to fulfil its purpose. • Great session today at the Municipal Association of Victoria and the Planning Institute of Australia Women’s Planning Network forum for council officers on how they can positively impact gender equity in councils’ town planning strategies and policies. Over 300 council officers working in town planning, gender equity, open space, infrastructure and community development attended – there is clearly a huge thirst for knowledge and goodwill to consider gender equity in the design of local community places 🏨🏗️🧑🤝🧑🏃♀️🏘️ We were joined by Dr Niki Vincent, Commissioner for Gender Equality in the Public Sector, and the PIA Women’s Planning Network who presented council case studies on how they undertook a Gender Impact Assessment required by the Victorian Gender Equality Act 2020. We know this session has started some great conversations among council officers!

  • A ballot pack for the council elections should now be in your letterbox or on its way! More than six million people will vote this election and decide who will fill the 646 council vacancies in 466 separate elections. By voting for the values and ideas that you think will best represent your area, you can help shape the future. Voters should complete and return their ballot material as soon as they receive it. Here are some dates to remember: 📆 25 October – Completed ballot papers must be sent to the VEC before 6pm. 📆 26 October – Election day: although technically no voting takes place on this date but the counting begins. 📅 November – Results announced. • Local government stands ready to help deliver the homes Victorians need, all located in great places connected to jobs, health, education and green open spaces. Councils – and industry – are worried that the current State Government approach is not joined-up in a way that will deliver practical outcomes on the ground, while risking poor planning decisions across Melbourne and Victoria. The State has sought feedback on a range of proposed planning reforms to ResCode and key activity centres identified in the Housing Statement. The MAV worked with our Housing Taskforce to recommended a commitment to the following good planning principles and engage with councils, industry and communities to: 📕 Undertake co-design with councils and industry leaders to ensure proposed plans and provisions align with the intent of the Victorian planning system, community expectations and shared strategic goals. 🏡 Outcomes must be focused on place-making for growing, sustainable communities and deliver on local housing needs – not just housing numbers. 💌 Share information on how plans have been developed, and be transparent why certain decisions were made 🤝 Give councils a seat at the table on discussions on reforms to infrastructure contributions and ways to do value capture in our activity centres 💖 Be honest with communities on the changes coming to their neighbourhoods, and commit to partnerships with councils who know their communities the best Check out those submission here: https://lnkd.in/ewq5MdD4 https://lnkd.in/eitRaQhm

MAV is committed to connecting with and supporting the sector to provide up to 30 hours of pre-prep. We recently hit the road to chat to the 2025 & 2026 Rollout Councils aligned with the Best Start Best Life Pre-Prep Reform agenda. It has been great to talk through both the challenges and opportunities of the program as well as discussing the 2026 Pre-Prep launch priority groups. Big thanks to Pyrenees Shire Council and Jerry van Delft, MAICD for hosting us, and for the inspiring conversations with Buloke Shire Council, Corangamite Shire Council and Loddon Shire Council Councils.
