Promoting the safety and wellbeing of children and young people through the prevention of violence, abuse and neglect.

About us

NAPCAN is Australia’s first secular not-for-profit organisation to focus entirely on the prevention of child abuse and neglect before it starts. Our aim is to help children, young people and their families by enabling everyone in society to play a part in keeping children safe and well. We do this by influencing social change, enabling communities to act locally and maximising our organisational capacity. Our strategy is focused on supporting high quality child abuse prevention research, advocating for child safe policies and strategies, coordinating National Child Protection Week, and providing a range of resources and training to support the safety and wellbeing of children and young people.

  • NAPCAN’s COO Greg Antcliff and National Youth Project Manager Oliver White attended the well-curated and put together ‘Engaging Men & Boys to End the Cycle of Violence’ by The Hatchery (Hub). It was impressive to see the level of collaboration across sectors and the work being done to wrap around young boys and men in the strive to end domestic and family violence. A special nod of acknowledgment needs to be given to No to Violence and The Man Cave for their partnership in this conference and the powerful messaging they brought through.

  • There have already been numerous reports into Child Abuse and Neglect in recent years, all of which have delivered evidence-based recommendations and solutions. This is why we support SNAICC's leadership in rejecting calls for a Royal Commission into Aboriginal Children, and their calls to instead focus on implementing the solutions already laid out by previous reports and studies. We want better futures for children and young people, where they can feel safe and supported to thrive. The way to move towards this is through acting on the evidence we have.

  • We are pleased to announce the appointment of Greg Antcliff as NAPCAN's new Chief Operating Officer. Greg brings over 20 years of experience as a registered psychologist and senior executive in child and family services, with a strong focus on evidence-informed practice. With his extensive background in early childhood education, child protection, and out-of-home care, Greg will play a pivotal role in advancing our mission to prevent child abuse and neglect across Australia. We’re proud of the team we’ve built here at NAPCAN, and excited to welcome Greg as we continue to advocate for the rights and wellbeing of children and young people. Watch this space in 2025!

This week, our CEO, Leesa Waters, and our Campaign and Policy Strategist, Zahra Al Hilaly, travelled to Canberra to present to the Senate inquiry into Australia’s youth justice and incarceration system. At NAPCAN, we believe young people must be at the centre of policy discussions that shape their futures. That is why, in October 2024, we hosted a National Youth Speak Out (NYSO) consultation, bringing together 20 young Australians from diverse backgrounds to share their lived experiences and perspectives on youth justice and incarceration. Their voices have directly informed our submission to the Senate, ensuring that young people’s insights are not only heard but also drive meaningful reform. You can read our submission here: https://lnkd.in/gmMh772x Stay tuned for further updates on how we continue to advocate for a justice system that prioritises prevention, rehabilitation, and the rights of young people.

If you aren’t already acquainted, meet NAPCAN’s Youth Speak Out Council (NYSO)! During our face-to-face meeting late last year, we came together to discuss all things NYSO, advocacy, and the importance of amplifying and implementing youth voices. You can watch the full video via our YouTube. To learn more about or work with NYSO, head to napcan.org.au/nyso.

A big congratulations to A/Prof Tim Moore and his team at ACU 👏

Congratulations to our Deputy Director A/Prof Tim Moore on receiving the Australian Catholic University Faculty of Education & Art Research Excellence Award that highlights an important partnership & collaboration w/ NAPCAN. His outstanding work, supported by Dr Mary Ann Powell, met the criteria for the Research Excellence Award in a Collaboration: making significant contributions to advancing knowledge, pushing the boundaries of a discipline, and achieving outstanding research outcomes.   The Collaboration Award acknowledges the collective efforts and achievements of academic staff who have led research collaboration across career levels, disciplines, schools and institutes, faculties, or institutions. Tim's nomination was about his work with partner NAPCAN, and much of this work was supported by Mary Ann. So hearty congratulations to Tim, Mary Ann and NAPCAN for working together to create great projects. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to keeping children safe.
