📷 There's just one week until 'Carol Jerrems: Portraits' opens at the Portrait Gallery! Do you recognise the first photograph? 'Vale Street' is the most well-known of Jerrems' works and in 2021 it became the most valuable Australian photograph ever sold at auction. With a near-mythological status in Australian art history, 'Vale Street was made when Jerrems was only 26. It was shot in the backyard of the St Kilda sharehouse where Jerrems’ friend, the photographer Robert Ashton lived, and it features aspiring actress Catriona Brown with two of Jerrems' students from Heidelberg Technical College, Mark Lean and Jon Bourke. The contact sheet (image 2) reveals the unhurried choreography that played out over the course of the shoot, eventually resulting in the infamous shot. We can't wait for you to see 'Vale Street' in the flesh from Saturday 30 November! 🎟️ Tickets are now on sale (with a special $10 ticket for under-30s).
