Townsville is set to play a central role in renewable energy storage with funding for a significant increase in iron flow battery electrolyte production. Through a joint venture between Energy Storage Industries Asia Pacific and Cleveland Bay Chemical Company production will leap from 3 million to 43 million litres per annum. With a total investment of $20 million, supported by a $3 million grant from the Department of State Development and Infrastructure, this expansion will generate up to 50 construction jobs and 20 operational roles, enhancing local manufacturing and the critical minerals supply chain. Leveraging Cleveland Bay Chemical Company's expertise in manufacturing high-purity specialty electrolyte, this project introduces an innovative process that further advances Australia's capabilities in the critical minerals sector. #ESIAsiaPacific Managing Director Stuart Parry said the support from the Regional Economic Futures Fund would enhance Australia’s energy security and create skilled jobs and economic opportunities. “We’re excited that our partnership with Cleveland Bay Chemical Company will expand production of Australia’s first iron-based electrolyte made for commercial batteries. Crucially, we're strengthening the resilience of the supply chain for iron flow batteries and supporting the development of a critical minerals supply chain as we improve energy security for all Australians.” Marking a significant advancement in Australia’s manufacturing capabilities and energy transition, this development complements the recent start of construction on the country’s first grid-scale battery manufacturing plant in Maryborough. Ark Energy, Korea Zinc’s subsidiary, has made a financial investment decision through its affiliate Ark Energy MacIntyre Pty Ltd to acquire 30% of the utility-scale MacIntyre Wind Farm located in Queensland, Australia. MacIntyre Wind Farm is currently under construction and being developed by ACCIONA Energia, a subsidiary of ACCIONA, a Madrid based energy company. The construction of the 162-wind turbine facility commenced in March 2022 is now 80% complete and full commercial operation is scheduled to commence in August 2025. At the time of its commissioning, MacIntyre Wind Farm will be the largest onshore wind farm in Australia and one of the largest around the world. With this financial investment decision, Ark Energy secures 30% of the project’s 923.4MW generation capacity. Approximately 30% of this will be supplied to Korea Zinc’s Sun Metals zinc refinery in north Queensland, Australia. A Korea Zinc official said, “The investment in MacIntyre Wind Farm will accelerate the decarbonization of Korea Zinc’s Australian businesses and the realization of the Troika Drive initiative.”
