Northern Institute is pleased to announce that three Tiwi researchers – Charlotte Portaminni, Theresa ‘Amy’ Munkara and Virgil Kerinaiua – have completed all the requirements for their Indigenous Community-Based Researcher Credentials!!! 🙌 These researchers were funded as the first members of the CDU-CSIRO community-based researcher program. Each researcher pursued their own projects, working from the ground up with other Tiwi community members and focusing on bush medicines🌿, recording ceremonies 🎥 and the Tiwi story of the Mapularri Prawn Farm development 🦐. On this journey, the researchers have been supported by senior Tiwi authority Ron Poantimilui, Fiona Smallwood-Power and Terry Sparrow from CSIRO and Michaela Spencer from Northern Institute . 📸 Back row L>R: Virgil Keriniaua, Ron Poantimilui, Terry Sparrow 📸 Front row L>R: Michaela Spencer, Amy Munkara, Fiona Smallwood-Power and Charlotte Portaminni To learn more about the Indigenous Research Credentials we offer visit> https://lnkd.in/g-y5YX2e #CDUResearch #tiwiresearch #indigenousresearch #groundupresearch #CollaborativeResearch Charles Darwin University Steve Rogers Professor Scott Bowman AO Fiona Coulson Professor Reuben Bolt Steven Greenland Adelle Sefton-Rowston Fiona Steele Bree Willsmore Melanie Mayo Ruth Wallace Gaylene Evans Cathy Robinson Centre for Indigenous Policy Research Environment Centre NT Kirsty Howey Tiwi Islands Regional Council Tiwi Land Council Tiwi College Tiwi College

While perhaps relatively politically moderate in intent, the week-long emphasis on building social awareness of trans serves as a counterpoint to the waves of misinformation, vilification and sometimes violence that have accompanied a public awakening to our presence. In this talk, I follow a path through the personal and the political – as trans lives always do – from points of moral panic to points of trans joy and gender euphoria. Along the way, I comment on trans as a push-button ‘issue’ and on contrasting anti-trans agendas in Australia and the UK. More importantly, I address how trans represents enlivened ways of theorising sex and gender and how it offers us all – trans and non-trans alike – pathways beyond debilitating binaries. 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 Professor Kim Humphery is Director of the Northern Institute at Charles Darwin University and incoming President of the The Australian Sociological Association. She is an interdisciplinary academic working across fields in the social sciences. Internationally, Kim is best known for her work on the socio-cultural and political dimensions of consumption and material life. She has also worked extensively on social and cultural aspects of Indigenous health (in the NT and Victoria) and cross-cultural research ethics. Kim's current research focuses on ethical/sustainable consumption and enterprise and trans studies, especially transfeminism. Racism is a community safety issue. Every government, business and organisation must recognise it and treat it as a community safety issue. Racism is harmful. It can reveal itself in disrespectful and offensive behaviour or unfair treatment that deeply affects the emotional wellbeing of the person affected by it. It is an ‘invisible’ harm, but harm all the same that can have deep traumatic impacts. Psychological safety is at risk. The recent experience by Aboriginal politician Mr Yingiya Guyula cannot go unnoticed for the harm it caused to him and the way it made him feel - "unwanted". If you are in the Northern Territory, you can contact the NT Anti-Discrimination Commission or make an anonymous report online https://lnkd.in/gqYhdGip. This is a call-to-action for positive duty laws in the NT to be implemented by all businesses and organisations. Positive duty in the NT applies to a range of discriminatory protected attributes, including the elimination and prevention of race discrimination. #keeptheTerritorysafe #racism #communitysafety #positiveduty #beproactive #callitout https://lnkd.in/gWchYwMp Samantha Dick

Last week, Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation representatives joined celebrations at Wurrumiyanga to recognise the incredible milestone of the Tiwi Islands Fire and Carbon Project successfully transitioning into a fully independent, Indigenous-owned carbon enterprise! I used a 3D Tiwi model, projection augmented with fire history animations I created for their Rangers program, to explain the fire work to INPEX Corporation folks and others. It has been a good way to explain the scale and complexity of the work. Tiwi rangers usually run the model but this day they were busy celebrating. Northern Institute Charles Darwin University

🔺NEW RESEARCH🔻 Diversity and Cultural Pedagogical Games and Play: Through an Aboriginal Lens 🟧 Assoc Professor Linda Ford 🟨 Dr Adriana Ticoalu 💻 https://bit.ly/lfatpub ABSTRACT Linda Payi Ford is a Rak Mak Mak Marranunggu, an Indigenous woman from Kurrindju, Top End of the Northern Territory, Australia. Ford applies her Mirrwana and Wurrkama Methodology to her Indigenous research practice and theory across multi-disciplinary fields including education, health, culture, and gender policy. As a qualified teacher, academician, and researcher, she draws from her professional experience spanning four decades. This chapter presents Ford’s lived experiences as she considers games and play through an Indigenous lens and to integrate the associated concepts across cultures. She has been able to do this form of practice from infancy and early childhood developmental milestones through adulthood, and she continues to apply these skills in the workforce and Indigenous community development. These forms of games and play have their own associated genres and practices that offer her challenges, but she considers them to be exciting and fun and describes them from her standpoint from both ways of cultural lens and femininity. 📔Ludic inquiries into power and pedagogy in higher education: How games play us.
