We had a terrific couple of days at our ANZ UniForum Annual Conference this week! UniForum members and colleagues came together to discuss common issues and shared practical experiences of service transformation, with exclusive access to insights based on UniForum data. It was filled with insightful and engaging conversations on how to achieve sustainability in an environment of increasing revenue constraints.

How can universities effectively manage their teaching to maximize resources and outcomes amidst increasing pressure to achieve both teaching efficiency and better outcomes for students?  We recently launched a new Teaching Effort Benchmark (TEB) to provide answers to this. Initial findings of TEB highlight both common challenges as well as lead practices for managing teaching effort and making informed decisions about the taught portfolio. Results point to portfolio concentration as the biggest driver of teaching efficiency, but also highlight other factors including scale of provision and approach to workforce management. TEB participant, Griffith University, provides a great example in taking steps forward in achieving leading practice, especially around how to act as ‘one institution’ without drowning out the views and expertise of academics. We’re developing a Student Experience Benchmark (SEB) for universities, to complement national and internal student surveys. The pandemic accelerated growing student expectations leading to a competitive landscape where universities are under pressure to enhance both student satisfaction and outcomes. Yet greater investment isn’t the answer. Nous’ inaugural student experience study showed that higher spending on student and teaching support services does not correlate with better student outcomes, such as improved graduate results or higher satisfaction scores. Instead, through our work with UniForum members, we've identified four core approaches: • Match your service model and levels with customer need. • Build areas of critical mass and expertise to drive excellence. • Use technology to focus support staff on what matters most. • Implement mechanisms to capture robust, timely feedback from students. Improving student satisfaction and outcomes amidst financial constraints requires universities to rethink their investment strategies. In response, we’re developing a Student Experience Benchmark (SEB) to complement national and internal surveys. SEB will help universities answer key questions about student-facing services and provide university service leaders with actionable insights to meet changing student needs and target services enhancements.
