Oakley Greenwood is pleased to announce the public release of the Gas Price Trends Review 2017 which documents Australia’s national and jurisdictional wholesale and retail gas price history from 2006 to 2017. Our thanks and congratulations to the COAG Energy Council and the Commonwealth Department of Environment and Energy on its continuing support of this study to help industry participants and consumers understand the trends and drivers of the price of a critically important energy commodity. Key points in the 2017 report include: - There has been a major uplift in wholesale gas prices on the east coast as forecast in our last report, with a slight easing in 2017. - However, there has been a major reversal in State-On-State price trends as gas prices migrate from north to south. - Clearly, structural supply and demand dynamics are set to play a very influential role. - Prices in Western Australia continued on a downward trend and are well below east coast gas prices. - And we have added a dedicated chapter on the critical trends in the commercial development of the gas transmission sector. The report can be found at the link: https://lnkd.in/gC77VaE or with other published on the OGW website

I'm very pleased to have been invited to speak at the Bundaberg Bioeconomy Conference in early September where I'll will outline our most recent analysis examining the critical role for regional biogas supply in the Autsralian tranistion to a low emisisons future. The theme for the 2024 conference focuses on maximizing the Bundaberg Region’s bioeconomy to minimize the environmental impact of the Brisbane 2032 Olympics. Key areas of exploration include sustainable aviation fuel, biogas, and carbon sequestration. This industry-focused event will showcase the thriving bioeconomy and highlight the opportunities available throughout the entire Bundaberg and Wide Bay Burnett Regions. https://lnkd.in/gwW3_T9J

For the 10th year now Oakley Greenwood will run its full day Master Class at the Australian Domestic Gas Outlook Conference in Sydney on Monday - some 40 registered and very pleasing to see that more than half are working in key Government roles (Policy, Regulation), mingling with a good mix from Producers, Retailers, Large Energy Users, LNG Importers, and Networks. Our team of Angus Rich, Rohan Harris, Bill Williams and Matt Currie will be joined by Robin Coombe just back from major LNG Conference in Asia. I will also be delivering a paper at the Renewable Gas day on the Thursday. https://lnkd.in/gYREJWTv

This work is timely and relevant across the NEM as well.
Rohan Harris and Gregory Thorpe were instrumental in investigating the critical bottlenecks that are hindering Western Australia (WA) ambitious stride towards a greener future. The "Bottlenecks affecting generation investment in WA" report, prepared for the Australian Energy Council by Oakley Greenwood, highlights the urgent need for reforms in grid connection processes and transmission planning. 🔍 Key Challenges: • A lengthy and opaque grid connection process is creating uncertainty for investors, delaying the integration of renewable and dispatchable energy sources. • The lack of comprehensive electricity transmission planning and investment poses a significant barrier to achieving WA's decarbonization targets. 🛠 Urgent Recommendations: 1. Streamline the Grid Connection Process: Ensuring a quicker, more transparent pathway is crucial for accelerating project deployment. 2. Clarify Network Planning: Confirming Western Power (preferred) or another independent body as the single authoritative source for network planning to eliminate confusion and encourage investment. 3. Base Transmission Planning on commercial generation and demand prospects: Generation and demand prospects depend on many factors including costs (and allocations) of transmission- requiring an iterative assessment to determine commercial prospects. 4. Clarify Cost-Recovery Mechanisms: Transparent and equitable charging and cost-recovery mechanisms are crucial for attracting and securing investment in the energy sector and are essential inputs to robust transmission planning. 🌱 The Road Ahead: Implementing these recommendations is not just about overcoming current hurdles; it's about unlocking WA's full potential for a sustainable energy future. By fostering a more attractive investment environment, we can expedite the deployment of renewable energy projects and ensure WA meets its ambitious decarbonization targets.
