Hydrogen can help decarbonize non-electricity driven industrial processes – as the Hyflexpower project demonstrates with a power-to-hydrogen-to-power system. Renewable energy generates hydrogen to be stored as fuel for a turbine (in place of natural gas) which generates electricity and heat to produce steam for paper recycling. This “Sector coupling” brings renewable energy from the electricity sector into other energy sectors to decarbonize the entire system, especially gas turbines. A rural New Zealand resident with grid-connected rooftop solar and battery system was studied, and line voltage was found over limits, curtailing power export. Solutions were explored, including distribution transformer tapping change and power factor management. The growth of these installations will change network management and utility income models, but utilities will still be required to operate networks. Find out more:https://lnkd.in/dvwWnWYz
