Stopping Pollution Entering Waterways

About us

For over two decades we have been leaders in the design, installation and maintenance of stormwater treatment assets and infrastructure. Our purpose beyond profit is to protect our waterways with the health of our oceans now at crisis levels. It’s predicted there will be more plastic in the sea than fish by 2050 and whilst plastic is part of the issue, so too is toxins and pollutants including sediments, heavy metals, nitrogen, phosphorous and cigarette butts that flow to the ocean from stormwater runoff. With an urgent need to accelerate the amount of pollution we capture on land, changes are necessary in human behaviour, knowledge and legislation. That’s why we are committed to three key areas: -Bringing about change to legislation that will have a real impact -Increasing public awareness of stormwater through education -Developing an advocacy program where we’ll share much-needed funds with worthwhile charities Change: We are actively raising public awareness and speaking with politicians to make maintenance of stormwater infrastructure and roads a legal and enforceable requirement. Without proper maintenance, all compulsory water treatment systems become ineffective and ultimately, our waterways pay the price. We estimate this change in legislation will save 240 litres of pollution from entering our waterways each day - that’s over 500 standard size wheelie bins! Education: We partnered with Keep Australia Beautiful to develop and deliver ocean conservation science modules to NSW primary schools. In 2020 we partnered with Eco Educate. Eco Educate works with primary and secondary schools across the country to deliver quality, curriculum-aligned education. Advocacy: In 2019, we’re partnered with five charities by donating $50,000 to their collective conservation efforts. We’re also fundraising for them via our online shop. We will increase our financial contribution to relevant causes in parallel with business growth year-on-year.

In this video, Ocean Protect ’s Brad Dalrymple inspects a conventional bioretention system in Logan Reserve, Queensland. The bioretention system doesn’t have any pre-treatment, such as a gross pollutant trap. As a result, litter is throughout the bioretention and Brad shares the odd items he finds. This video highlights the importance of ‘at source’ pollution reduction and/or pre-treatment of stormwater. In this week's Ocean Protect Podcast Brad Dalrymple chats with Jessica Coughlan, a campaigner with Neighbours of Fish Farming, a community organisation in southern Tasmania. The goal of Neighbours of Fish Farming is to promote sustainable, responsible fish farming, regulated by transparent government and commercial processes. In this discussion, they talk about what it's like to be a neighbour of a fish farm, what Atlantic Salmon farming is really like, and what you can do about it. Have you ever wondered what the pollution looks like that is captured within stormwater treatment assets operating in urban areas within Australia? Join our FREE webinar tomorrow, 'Stormwater Pollution in the 'real world'' for an insight into what stormwater pollution actually looks like in the ‘real world’. It is the 9th session in our very popular 'Stormwater Fundamentals Series'. Register here https://lnkd.in/g4kJkzys Brad Dalrymple, Daniel Rider and Fotos Melaisis will take you on a virtual journey underground – and show you exactly what is retained within stormwater treatment assets across Australia, including gully pit inserts, gross pollutant traps, membrane filtration systems and cartridge systems. Implications for the appropriate design, construction, and management of stormwater treatment assets will also be discussed. This 45-minute session will include a presentation followed by a Q&A session with attendees. A certificate of CPD can be provided to attendees upon request.

Congratulations to RMA Engineers on completing the Kellys Beach Estate in Bargara, a charming coastal town in the Bundaberg Region of Queensland. The Ocean Protect team helped integrate three (3) Filterra® bioretention systems within the estate to help protect the adjacent Moneys Creek Lagoon and nearby beaches. The Filterra® System is a high-flow biofiltration/bioretention technology, that has a small footprint suited to highly developed sites, such as housing estates, and is optimised to achieve high pollution removal and resilience in a significantly smaller area than ‘conventional’ biofiltration systems. Learn more about Filterra® here https://lnkd.in/grmqNNV

RMA is pleased to share the recent completion of Kellys Beach Estate, a 32-lot residential subdivision overlooking the water in the heart of Bargara. Engaged as the Principal Consultant, RMA’s Bundaberg team worked closely with our valued, long-term client to provide engineering and development advisory services. Our multi-disciplinary team provided a coordinated service approach, managing the project in-house, through the DA and operational works phases. We undertook an initial site analysis and developed a layout that catered for the site’s complex stormwater management needs whilst improving feasibility for the developer. Our team developed a non-standard design solution using Filterra by Ocean Protect which removed the need for traditional bioretention basins and ultimately increased the development yield. As we progressed to the construction stage, RMA offered a full suite of construction management services, including tendering, contract administration and site supervision. We have a passion for collaborating with repeat clients to deliver a service focused on their development outcomes.
