Stormwater Engineer at Arup | 2024 Australian Emerging Stormwater Professional of the Year | 2024 QLD Emerging Professional Engineer of the Year
Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Stormwater, Environment, and Technology National Conference (SET 2024) at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, hosted by Stormwater Australia. It was an inspiring two days filled with insightful keynote presentations and over 40 sessions exploring key topics that are shaping the future of our industry. https://lnkd.in/gd5gm4Md SET 2024 brought together an incredible mix of researchers, designers, engineers, scientists, legal professionals, community leaders, and technology providers. The conference truly highlighted the synergies between stormwater, sustainability, and technology, offering a platform for new research findings, innovation, and best practices. Two days of immersive discussions covered topics ranging from environmental law and policy to water-sensitive urban design, erosion control, and nature-based solutions. We explored how technology can help us better understand and manage stormwater impacts on our environment, while also fostering collaboration across industries and disciplines. I had the fantastic opportunity to network with peers, build new relationships, and strengthen existing connections. It was an honour to meet fellow Arupians from across the country, including Celeste Morgan, George Hill and Tom Wardley. I was also privileged to witness insightful and engaging presentations from my Arup colleagues Katie Fletcher and Tina Wang, as well as Stormwater Queensland committee members Courtney Henderson, Adrian Crocetti, Glenn Browning, Ben Walker, Kylie Drapala, Brad Dalrymple, and emerging professionals Riley de Jong, Sophie Waldron and Isaac Oyekanmi. And the highlight—and most amazing surprise—of the event? Being awarded the National Emerging Leader - Early Stormwater Professional of the Year at the conference dinner.🏆 I am beyond humbled and incredibly grateful for this recognition, especially as the very first recipient of this award category in Australia! It truly reflects the immense support, encouragement, and guidance I have received from my incredible colleagues, mentors, and the broader stormwater industry. I am so proud to be part of a field that is nurturing and empowering the next generation of leaders. A huge congratulations to all the winners and finalists of the National Awards of Excellence, and a heartfelt thank you to every delegate, speaker, exhibitor, and attendee who made this event truly exceptional. Your passion and dedication continue to elevate the standards of excellence in our field. Let’s keep pushing the boundaries of innovation, sustainability and collaboration in our industry! I look forward to continuing this journey with all of you, knowing that together we are embracing change, inspiring one another and empowering emerging professionals in the stormwater and environment community. 🌟 Mark Gibson Cath Thrupp Bryan Ward #Stormwater #EmergingLeaders #IndustryCollaboration

🌧 Channeling Our Stormwater Muse: Andrew Allan 🌧 Our Monday Musings are monthly lunchtime training sessions, where the team gathers to exchange ideas and share a meal. Considering Andrew’s big week at the Stormwater Australia conference (where he co-presented a workshop on Day 1), it only seemed fair to make him our Muse for this month! Andrew, alongside Darren Drapper from Drapper Environmental Consultants, contributed to discussions on the future of stormwater management in Australia with their workshop focused on SQIDEP. The session explored the critical role of proprietary devices and how the SQIDEP protocol ensures these systems are rigorously tested for effectiveness in real-world conditions. They provided attendees with a detailed overview of the protocol’s key principles, evaluation methods, and submission requirements, along with practical insights on field testing and verification. During our Musing, Andrew also reflected on trends he observed at the conference: 💡 Innovation in Software – Exciting developments are underway with integrated tools that could bridge the gap between quality and hydraulics. 📊 Real-Time Monitoring & AI – Emerging technologies are enabling smarter data analysis, giving us new ways to manage stormwater more effectively. 🌏 Global Standards – Australia continues to benchmark well against international peers, but there’s always room for improvement. Andrew’s key message? There’s a lot of great work happening, but the stormwater community still has much to do. Stormies – this is your call to action! #Stormwater #KnowledgeSharing #SQIDEP #StormwaterManagement #Stormies

🌦 Storming Ahead at SET 🌦 This week, Chris Beardshaw and Andrew Allan attended the SET Stormwater, Environment, and Technology National Conference in Brisbane to discuss key challenges in stormwater management. Many in the industry, have voiced frustrations with the current state of stormwater management in Victoria. While local planning issues play a role, it’s evident that stronger national leadership is essential for driving meaningful change. It’s encouraging to see Stormwater Australia recognising this need, with real potential for positive developments on the horizon. Chris and Andrew had the privilege of dining with the National Secretary and spending the evening in deep discussions with board members and esteemed stormwater professionals about the future of these critical issues. Key national debates include flood assessment criteria (afflux), Future of Water Quality modelling (is MUSIC working for us 20 years on?), and should the stormwater senate enquiry items (that Andrew and Chris presented at in 2015) be picked up and refreshed? https://lnkd.in/gi5qqJFw Of course, no trip to Brisbane would be complete without experiencing the city's famous rain – and its drainage systems – in full action! Feel free to connect if you're interested in discussing the direction of stormwater management in Australia. #Stormwater #Leadership #StormwaterManagement #SETConference #NationalConference #WaterQuality #StormwaterAustralia #AffluxConsulting

Following our recent Stormwater Queensland Award, I am so pleased to share that TUFLOW CATCH has gone on to win Stormwater Australia's 2024 National Award for Research and Innovation. TUFLOW CATCH is our new integrated environmental software platform. Initial development of TUFLOW CATCH was a collaboration between Alluvium Group (led by Tony Weber), TUFLOW and Griffith University, and was supported by the Queensland Water Modelling Network and Healthy Land & Water. It is an absolute pleasure and privilege to be part of a professional industry that is both embracing change and supporting the continual improvement of the software tools we use to understand, protect and enhance our environment. Many thanks all. Onwards! #tuflow Ben Walker, Kim Markwell, Chris Huxley
