Last week we hosted our 2024 OET Forum, “English for Healthcare: Safeguarding Our Global Community”, bringing together our partners and industry experts in London for meaningful conversations on the importance of supporting international healthcare professionals to build their workplace-ready English skills.    Our panelists, including representatives from diaspora groups, shared invaluable insights on the challenges and solutions in bridging communication gaps in the healthcare workplace - thanks to Felicia Kwaku (Nigerian Nurses Charitable Association UK), Suresh Packiam (British Indian Nurses Association), May Parsons, Dennis Singson (Philippine Nurses Association UK) & Dean Gimblett (Capital Nurse)   We also heard from industry leaders: Colin Edwards NHS Counter Fraud Specialist discussing malpractice prevention; Gad Lim, OET’s Head of Assessment and Research on designing secure testing; and Dr Brigita Seguis, Head of Impact Evaluation at Cambridge University Press and Assessment, sharing new research on OET’s positive social impact for recruiters, clinical educators and healthcare professionals.    Thank you to everyone who joined us for these critical conversations. OET was thrilled to join healthcare leaders at the NELFT NHS Foundation Trust Best Practices in Pastoral Care conference recently in London. The event focused on supporting overseas-trained healthcare professionals in their journey to integrate and thrive in the UK workforce. Throughout the day, insightful talks and practical sessions highlighted key ways to support international professionals. Here are some top takeaways: * Connecting with diaspora groups: Building community is vital for overseas healthcare professionals. NHS Employers has some great resources and a full list of groups on their website. * Support from RCN: The Royal College of Nursing - Company offers a wealth of resources to help overseas professionals succeed. * Stay and Thrive: This NHS England NEY & SW initiative offers a range of support services to help overseas professionals succeed in their roles, including the Stay and Thrive podcast. * Protecting against scams: Overseas healthcare professionals can be vulnerable to scams during recruitment or after arriving in the UK. In 2023, OET launched the Protect Yourself campaign to help raise awareness and protect international healthcare workers. Together, we can create a supportive environment for healthcare professionals from around the world.

We were honoured to be part of the Victoria Connect Networking Reception hosted by the Victorian Government Trade and Investment Commission. It was inspiring to hear from Hon. Jacinta Allan MP, Premier of Victoria, as she spoke about the growing strength of the India-Australia relationship and the pivotal role international education plays in it. Her focus on creating welcoming policies for #internationalstudents and skilled #workers from India—those who dream of studying, living, and working in Australia—was a powerful reminder of the positive impact these connections have on communities and industries alike. We were #delighted that OET’s efforts to support the migration of healthcare students and professionals to Australia were recognised in her address. Our commitment remains steadfast: to empower Indian healthcare professionals with the language skills they need to succeed, helping to break down communication barriers and unlock opportunities for growth and achievement. Our OET Europe, Middle East, and Africa team had a truly inspiring experience at the EALTHY 2024 conference. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with global OET Test preparation partners and exchange ideas on how to further support healthcare professionals in their English language journeys. OET Education Specialist, Joanne Bass, spoke about the significant impact the OET Test has on healthcare professionals’ careers, emphasising the crucial role that teachers play in helping candidates succeed. The team also attended insightful sessions on medical English, gaining valuable insights into the evolving needs in this field. A highlight of the event was hearing from refugee support groups RefuAid and REACHE, who shared their inspiring work helping displaced healthcare workers overcome linguistic and professional challenges to rebuild their careers. For those interested in becoming an OET teacher, the team is excited to share that OET’s official teacher training program has been updated. The free training includes refreshed content, lesson plans, and practical guidance specifically tailored for teaching the OET Test—an excellent opportunity to further develop teaching skills. 📝 Sign up: https://lnkd.in/gdAUwNBG
