Happy 9th Birthday Opposite! We’ve been spiralling into control ever since starting in 2015 – and what a wild, intentional, and human ride it’s been! 🌀✨ With each twist and turn, we’ve leaned further into human-centred design – exploring new ways to help businesses, teams, and individuals find clarity through complexity. It’s been all about asking better questions, challenging the norm, and designing with people, not for them. Opposite wouldn’t exist without the brilliant clients, collaborators, and connections we’ve made along the way. Thanks to all of you who’ve trusted us to help navigate the mess, simplify the complex, and, sometimes, even do the opposite of what everyone expects. It’s been a joy spiralling into control with you. 🎢 #OppositeTurnsNine #HumanCentredDesign #SpirallingIntoControl #BusinessDesign #OppositeThinking #ExpectOpposite Also add, thank you...to all the team members! Mountains of procedures that nobody uses? We’re the only ones crazy enough to go through each one and fix this! We simplify them into simple, sequential steps that can be used by humans and translate them into digital tools. Take a look at one of our favourite ones--also one of our first. Since then, we have conducted dozens of simplification projects. I might even be as bold as to say we are the leading simplification experts! #simplificationprocess #businesstools #simplifyprocedures #exoectopposite

🎬 Cue the office sitcom opening theme 🎶 Today on “The Workplace”… enter Unpredictable Leader, who’s somehow mastered the art of scheduling urgent 4:59 PM meetings. Will their team survive the chaos? Will the Wi-Fi hold up for Isolated Worker stuck on Zoom Island? Tune in to find out… 😅 But in all seriousness, it’s #WorldMentalHealthDay! 🧠 And it’s the perfect time to check in on your mental health—especially at work. Did you know it’s also Week 2 of National #SafeWorkMonth? This week’s focus: Psychosocial Hazards (cue dramatic music 🎻). These sneaky hazards might not break the printer, but they can definitely wear down your mental health. Think: 📌 Unpredictable Leader (we see you!) 📌 Demanding jobs that make you wish you had extra arms 📌 The control freak who leaves you powerless 📌 Workplace bullies who think they’re starring in their own drama 📌 And Isolated Worker, who’s now on a first-name basis with their Wi-Fi router… These unseen risks—poor leadership, high demands, harassment, poorly managed changes—can really impact mental health. But don’t worry, we’ve got this! By spotting these psychosocial hazards and creating safe, supportive environments, we can boost well-being, reduce burnout, and make work a much better place. Let’s commit to workplaces where both mental and physical safety reign supreme. Because we all deserve to thrive, even on Zoom Island! 🌴 Oh, and if you need a hand diagnosing your workplace sitcom scenarios, give Opposite a call . We do comprehensive psychosocial assessments. www.opposite.com.au #SafetyisOurBusiness #MentalHealth #WorkSafe #PsychosocialSuperheroes #Workplacewellbeing #Healthyworkplace

🙇♂️ Are you a humble person? According to our guest, Professor Simon Moss, studies have revealed that humble people tend to be generous people. They offer their: ⌛ time and sacrifice their needs 🆘 help or they 💛 encourage other individuals. But is this generosity a ⭐ blessing or a ☠️ curse? Simon share with us his perspectives on a new concept #radicalhumility, which is a movement to prevent narcissism and promote humility for the good of society. That's what our #itsaboutnothing podcast is about today with Dr Nicholas Duck and Cam Hawker! Psychosocial is more than preventing mental health issues. Workplace factors that increase this risk also tend to result in undesirable outcomes, such as absenteeism and lower productivity and harmony. In short, psychosocial risk is bad for business. We've recently developed some new tools and methods to assess the psychosocial risk of your organisation. This involved reviews through rigorous assessments, interviews, observation, and incident data analysis. Importantly, we don't like to leave anyone with a risk profile and no ideas on what to do. We also help design and implement solutions to lower your psychosocial risk profile and promote well-being in the workplace. #psychologicalrisk #healthyworkplace #workplacewellbeing #productivity #expectopposite #organisationalpsychology

Recently, we conducted a two-day workshop for a client with some great feedback. One of the attendees said 'last year I really wasn't looking forward to this but then I loved it. This year, you've managed to do it again'. It really is the positive experiences like this that make it all worthwhile! 🙂 We treat each workshop like an event, designing and developing activities that get you and your team thinking and interacting. We do everything from large-scale strategic workshops, targeted team development programs and short and sharp sessions with a specific outcome in mind. #userexperience #workshopdesign #userengagement #workshopactivities #teamdevelopment #expectopposite

What’s making you not OK? Today is "Are You OK?" Day—a reminder to check in on mental health. But what if we went deeper? What if we stopped viewing mental health struggles as personal issues to manage alone and started looking at the risks in our workplaces that may be driving them? Psychosocial risks are the hidden stressors in our work environments—things like excessive workloads, unclear job roles, poor management practices, and lack of support. These factors can lead to burnout, anxiety, and a whole range of mental health issues. It's not enough to just ask, "Are you OK?" when the real question is, “What’s making you not OK?” 🔄 Flip the narrative: Instead of waiting for individuals to reach a breaking point, let’s ask how workplaces can proactively identify and control these risks to support everyone’s mental health. 🏢 What can workplaces do to control psychosocial risks? Conduct Psychosocial Risk Assessments: Just like we assess physical hazards, let’s regularly evaluate the psychosocial risks in our environment. Are there unreasonable deadlines, role ambiguity, or lack of autonomy? Implement Targeted Interventions: Use these assessments to guide actionable changes—adjust workloads, clarify roles, provide training for managers on supportive leadership, and ensure employees have access to necessary resources. Create a Culture of Openness and Trust: Encourage employees to speak up about stressors without fear. A psychologically safe workplace is one where conversations about mental health are normalized and encouraged. Monitor and Adapt: Regularly review and update measures to ensure they are effective. Just as safety protocols evolve, so too should strategies for managing psychosocial risks. 🗣️ Shift the conversation: Instead of asking, "Are you OK?" ask, "How can we make this workplace safer for your mental well-being?" Let’s move beyond surface-level solutions and address the root causes that impact mental health. Today, let’s make a commitment—not just to check in with our colleagues but to challenge the systems that contribute to stress and burnout. A mentally healthy workplace doesn’t happen by accident; it happens by design. #AreYouOKDay #WorkplaceMentalHealth #PsychosocialRisks #ChallengeTheNorm #WorkplaceWellbeing #BurnoutPrevention #HealthyWorkplace
