"It's not always about salary and benefits. The top reason for people leaving is actually that they don't see a clear career path or development plan within the organisation," said Matthew Burrows during a webinar two years ago I've just re-watched. I looked it up after speaking with someone who felt stuck in a dead-end job. No growth, no learning - just routine tasks with no clear direction, no excitement. It’s like taking out the trash - necessary but uninspiring. When a company is profitable but more focused on protecting its market share than growing, it becomes clear: if they don’t want to grow, why would they help you grow? What remains, at the end of the day, is the trade of precious time for a thin pay-check, with no opportunity for advancement. However, in the time of ghost jobs, regulatory gaps, and global uncertainty, staying bored in a secure role might be a reasonable option, especially when others are struggling. After hearing their frustrations, I saw an opportunity to use my experience to help. I've set up a project to guide them towards a more mature way of working and decided to use #SFIA to map out a clear skills path. My goal is to transparently identify the skills they can gain through their work, hopping it helps them stay motivated as they grow. I’m planing this in a way that wasn’t done for me: openly sharing the process and leaving it up to them how much they want to evolve. I feel so strongly about it that I've refused to research the reasons advising why I shouldn't. It feels right. This project will be driven by their goals. Their improved output will lead to better input from me, ultimately benefiting them. My return? Pure satisfaction. Well... the project will also be only mine (one of those that I would eventually, one day, maybe, work on... expect, if I did it alone... I would do it a lot faster ahaha).
